The Origin Of
t the age of seventeen I fell in love with Italian cinema and the entire sweep of Italian art films that had been thrilling the world all during the 1960’s: La Dolce vita, Divorce Italian Style, La Strada. It was a world of glamour and style – skinny ties, Italian shoes, sports cars, ray-ban sunglasses, caffe lattes, mod clothes. It featured wonderful stars like Marcello Mastroianni, anouk aimée, Claudia Cardinale, Sandra Milo, anita Ekberg!… scores of them… exuding class, intelligence, beauty, style. I spent a decade and a half growing up to be a composer and creator of musicals, and turning this cinematic world – this object of my deepest love – into the broadway musical “Nine” in a theatrical form conducive to the live stage. In my mind, the protagonist, film director guido Contini, hadn’t really internally evolved beyond being an emotional nine-year-old, yearning for the unconditional love of the women in his adult life to go on forever. My creative life became dedicated to exploring and revealing the thoughts and emotions of the women
A
surrounding him… the wife, the mistress, the muse, the mother, the whore… all in musical terms… in an attempt to find the origin of this amazing culture of sensuality and Catholicism – a culture that could create the idea of a Casanova, a Latin lover, a man who could worship women yet not understand them or himself enough to know that he had already found the absolute perfect one for him. and he would learn this, sadly, only after it was too late. what a lesson. but perhaps then it could be possible for him to grow. I may never recover from the shock of being told that the extraordinary rob Marshall was interested in directing a film based on this musical. It was essential that he feel free to forge ahead on his own and that he knew I trusted him to transform the stage show into a film, in the same way I had adapted the world of cinema into a stage show. Pointing a camera at a stage and thinking the result would be a film could never work. rob had to be free to create in pure cinematic terms, independent of any of my preconceptions. by some act of impossible grace,
he found a way to accomplish that and at the same time to ask me for changes, cuts, new songs, radical new approaches. what a gift – for me to be given the chance to do it all over again, afresh, with this magnificent visionary of a director, who would answer an aimée, a Milo and a Cardinale with a Cotillard, a Cruz, and a Kidman – in addition to the protean actor Daniel Day-Lewis… plus Dame Judi, Kate Hudson, Fergie and (impossible to believe) a central part of the original DNa that created the Italian cinema in the first place: Sophia Loren. Enter our world, Italy’s world, broadway’s world, and now the cinematic world of rob Marshall, one of our greatest contemporary directors, and explore the mystery, the fantasy, the glory, and the love that has occupied the creative lives of hundreds of people over two years to create this film and this soundtrack. I look back at myself at age 17, and now realize I might just be the luckiest man in the world, and I am surely the most grateful. MAURY YESTON
