Junior Honors/CP/Tech Independent Reading General requirements: Independent reading is required in all Language Arts classes at Grayson High School. At the Junior level, grades associated with independent reading make up a total of 10% of the student’s grade. Page requirements: Page requirements may be met using one book or a combination of no more than two books. 1. Honors: 700 pages per semester 2. College Prep: 600 pages per semester 3. Technical: 350 pages per semester Guidelines: Junior Language Arts teachers will require students to follow the following guidelines for each semester: 1. Books must be fiction (or nonfiction that consists of one story). No biographies, self-help books, etc. 2. Books must be appropriate in content. 3. Books that have been made into films must be approved by the teacher. 4. No elementary/middle school books 5. No collections of stories/vignettes (The book must consist of only one story) 6. No books that have been required for previous school courses NOTE: Students must show their independent reading books to their Junior Language Arts teacher by August 22 (end of the 2nd week of school) to make sure the books meet the guidelines listed above. If a student’s book does not meet the guidelines listed above, s/he may be required to change books. Assessments: Independent reading will be assessed at the teacher’s discretion, using one or more of the methods listed below: 1. Book conference with the teacher (student must bring book to conference). 2. Project such as: - PowerPoint or Portfolio Pages - CD/Soundtrack compilations - Scrapbook or visual assignment - Videotaped book review 3. Written assignment - Literary analysis - Response paper Deadlines: Independent reading may be assessed as early as September, but ALL independent reading assessments will be completed by October 31 (end of 12 weeks). The teacher will assign reading and project deadlines at the beginning of each semester.
