BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH & SCHOOL

The 58,000 square foot parish of Blessed Sacrament includes a 750 seat worship space, a 70 seat chapel, administrative offices, classrooms for 400 students, a gymnasium and a cafeteria. The building plan is based on the medieval monastery built around an open cloister garden. Contrasting materials identify the two basic parish functions: white split-face block is used for places of worship and red brick is used for educational and administrative components. Local artisans were commissioned for stained glass, metalwork, silk banners and ceramic tile. The project was completed in 1989 for $5 million and received a 1989 Design Award of Excellence from the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and is featured in the January/February 1991 issue of Inform magazine. Father Andrew Cifreni served as the Liturgical Consultant for the Parish.
