Research Proposal for Research Masters (M.Litt) and PhD in
Submission of a structured research proposal is an additional requirement for
application to our M.Litt. and PhD programmes.
We would strongly recommend that you initially identify and make contact with a
member of staff of the Department of Geography, whose area of academic interest
most closely relates to your own proposed research. Details of all staff members are
to be found on our Department webpage: (http://www.nuigalway.ie/geography/).
We will be pleased to provide you with whatever advice possible in choosing an
appropriate area of research and in formulating your research proposal. The aim of
such initial contacts is also to help you identify a suitable research supervisor.
The research proposal should be no less than 1,000 words in length, and structured
under the following headings:
1. A working title of the subject area
2. Description of the proposed research:
This should state the key issue that your research intends to address, and the
key theoretical debates and/or empirical phenomena that are underpinning it. In
other words, what questions are driving your research, what is it you are trying
to find out by undertaking this project?
3. Location of the study in existing research:
This should include a brief literature review which illustrates your familiarity with
the main debates and critical issues pertaining to the subject area in question. It
should also demonstrate how your proposed research will add to this field of
knowledge, how it will address existing gaps in these debates or in the
4. Research methods:
An outline of the nature and feasibility of data collection, and possible
methodological approaches that will be applied.
6. Name of supervisor
The research proposal is considered in conjunction with all other required
documentation (as outlined on the PAC admissions webpage). Decisions on
applications are made by the Department’s Postgraduate Committee.
