under way on Lake Michigan in 2009

Since 2000 we dreamed off going on a long cruise on the water, especially the ‘Great Circle Tour’
from Michigan, down the mighty Mississippi River, to the Gulf of Mexico to Florida and then back up
along the East coast. Since then, we’ve been reviewing our options and making plans. We’ve come
to realize, that a scaled down version is more realistic for us. We also decided to give up our sailboat
the “Yukon Mist’ and switch over to a motor boat. Comfort played a big role in this decision. For
several years we have reviewed and looked at hundreds of boats that would match our criteria for our
next boat:

   1. We must be able to trailer it home each season. Working on it in the winter is one of Keith’s
      favorite pastimes.

   2. It must be fuel efficient. Since we’ll be motoring for more than 3,000 miles we did not want the
fuel cost to break the bank. We’re sailors and used to enjoying boating at slow speeds, so a
large fuel hogging motor for high speed was not a requirement.

   3. It must accommodate only 2 people comfortably. Most boats, even at 20’ and up, are built to
accommodate 4 or more people and end up providing cramped space for all.

   4. Low maintenance. No wood or canvass exposed to the weather! Our previous boats had both
and required constant maintenance, while the metal, fiberglass and glass required very little to
      look good.

We settled on a 50 year old, tired 26’ steel utility boat that was build in 1959 and used by a Bay
City Michigan marine in the 1960’s and 1970’s to service freighters on the Great Lakes. We spent
two years to bring her back from a certain death and named her “Steel Revival’. For details on the
rebirth of the ‘Steel Revival’ go to www.knschoonveld.blogspot.com

Following is our planned itinerary for our upcoming trip. This is still a work in progress. The current
plan is to leave sometime in late June or early July, 2010 and return 3 months later. We’re busy
reviewing charts, towns, and many other sources that will affect our plans. Whatever our final
plans, they will always be subject to change.

Leg 6 Alternate - Rideau Canal / Ottawa River

Once the most dominant feature of Ottawa, most drivers passing over this bridge never notice the
beautiful flight of eight locks. More than just an item of passing historic interest, these locks are the
reason for the founding of Ottawa and represent an amazing engineering achievement in the
middle of the Canadian wilderness of the early 19th century.

                     Rideau Canal transit one way 26’ X $ 4.65 = $ 120.90
