The Holy Spirit & the godhead
There Are Three In The Godhead:
Ro. 1:7 - The Father: is God
Grace to you and peace from God our Father

Jn 1:1, 14 - The Son: is God
the Word was God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us

Acts 5:3-4 The Holy Spirit: is God
to lie to the Holy Spirit, …thou has not lied unto men, but unto God.

The Holy Spirit & the godhead
There Are Three In The Godhead: Mt 3:16-17: baptism of Jesus. 3 distinct persons. Jesus being baptized, the Spirit descending as a dove, and the Father’s voice “this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”. Eph 4:4-6: one Spirit, one Lord, one Father. Mt 28:19: baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 2 Co 13:14: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Heb 9:14: how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish unto God, 1 Pt 3:18: Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit; Here’s the point: these are 3 separate persons – each possess deity – and they work together as one.

HE IS The Holy Spirit
Summary of Who He Is:
There are 3 in the Godhead – The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. 3 separate “persons” working together as one.
That as the Father and the Son have attributes and characteristics of personhood, so does the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is Deity.
The importance of establishing this is that we think on the Holy Spirit in the same way that we think on the Father and the Son. HE – The Holy Spirit – IS GOD!!

Inspiration / Revelation:
How were the mind, will, and thoughts of God made known to man?

2 Timothy 3:16: All scripture is given by inspiration of God... OLD TESTAMENT 2 Peter 1:20-21: knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation. For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.

NEW TESTAMENT
Hebrews 1:1-2: God, having of old time spoken unto the fathers in the prophets by divers portions and in divers manners, 2 hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in his Son… John 14:16-17: And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever, 17 even the Spirit of truth:
John 14:26: But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.

NEW TESTAMENT
1Co 2:9-13: but as it is written, Things which eye saw not, and ear heard not, And which entered not into the heart of man, Whatsoever things God prepared for them that love him. 10 But unto us God revealed them through the Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of the man, which is in him? even so the things of God none knoweth, save the Spirit of God. 12 But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is from God; that we might know the things that were freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Spirit teacheth; combining spiritual things with spiritual words.

INSPIRATION / REVELATION THE WORK of The Holy Spirit
Inspiration / Revelation: How were the mind, will, and thoughts of God made known to man? Ephesians 3:3-5 how that by revelation was made known unto me the mystery, as I wrote before in few words, 4 whereby, when ye read, ye can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ; 5 which in other generations was not made known unto the sons of men, as it hath now been revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit; 1 Jn 1:3-4 what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, …

4 These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.

THIS IS HOW THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS MADE KNOWN - TO MAN - THE MIND OF GOD!

Spiritual gifts their purpose & duration
Purpose of the Spiritual Gifts:

Confirm the Word Preached
Hebrews 2:3-4 how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? which having at the first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed unto us by them that heard; God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders, and by manifold powers, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit,

according to his own will. 1 Cor. 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Spiritual gifts their purpose & duration
Purpose of the Spiritual Gifts:

Edification of the Church
1 Cor. 14:3-5 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation. He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 1 Cor. 12:7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the
Spirit to profit withal. (i.e. for the profit of all)

Spiritual gifts their purpose & duration
Purpose of the Spiritual Gifts:

To Convince Unbelievers
1 Cor. 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: Acts 2:4-11 – Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. – Each man heard them speaking his own language. – “saith God, I will pour forth of My Spirit” John 14:10-11 Jesus basically taught that we must believe on His words because the works were a validation of His words. Notice that He gives the Holy Spirit to do the same for establishing truth after He has ascended.

Spiritual gifts their purpose & duration
Duration of the Spiritual Gifts: {key text is 1 Co. 13:8-12} “They shall be done away…they shall cease”
1 Cor. 13:8 prophecies, tongues, & knowledge will be done away / cease. “but whether there be prophecies, they shall be done away; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall be done away.”
These 3 gifts stand for the whole group of gifts (see 1 Co 12:7-11) Their (gifts of the Spirit) Duration is until “that which is perfect is come”

What does "that which is perfect" refer to? - 1 Co 13:9-10 – The context reveals a contrast between “partial”, and that which is “perfect” – 1) "perfect" (teleios) means "brought to its end, finished; wanting nothing necessary to completeness; perfect..." (Thayer) – 2) The contrast: a) Between the partial knowledge at the time it was being revealed through spiritual gifts b) And the time when such knowledge would be completely revealed (i.e., when God's revelation was final)

Spiritual gifts their purpose & duration

Two illustrations are used to make this contrast - 1 Co 13:11-12 1st - Showing a contrast between infancy and maturity. a) Spiritual gifts served during the infancy (beginning) of the church b) Once their purpose (to reveal and confirm) was complete, things necessary to the beginning of the church are done away. 2nd - Showing a contrast between a vague image and a clear image. a) During the period when knowledge of God's will was not yet complete, it was like looking at a dim mirror. b) Once God's word was completely revealed, it would be like seeing oneself much more clearly.
IF WE CAN DETERMINE IF THE WORD OF GOD HAS BEEN COMPLETELY REVEALED TO MAN – THEN WE CAN DETERMINE IF SPIRITUALS GIFTS HAVE CEASED.

Spiritual gifts their purpose & duration
Duration of the Spiritual Gifts: {key text is 1 Co. 13:8-12} Has the word of God been completely revealed? 2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Peter 1:3 Seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. Jude 3 …I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. THE COMPLETE REVELATION OF GOD’S WORD HAS BEEN MADE KNOWN BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, THEREFORE SPIRITUAL GIFTS HAVE CEASED.

THE HOLY SPIRIT HIS ROLE IN CONVERSION
Having already looked at the Holy Spirit’s work in the revelation of God’s word, we will now look at how the word of God is essential to God’s plan of redemption. Much false teaching has taken place over the work of the Holy Spirit when it comes to the conversion of men and women. Many denominations teach that the direct operation of the Holy Spirit is an essential to, and a sign of, their salvation. Plan of redemption – according to the scriptures Eternal Plan The plan of redemption is an eternal plan that originates in the mind of God Acts 2:23; 4:28; Eph 3:11; 2 Tim 1:9

Plan Made Known by The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit guided the apostles and prophets to make His revelation known to all mankind. These inspired writings are the instrument of the Holy Spirit to convict and convert the sinner. Eph 3:3-5; John 20:30-31; John 16:8-11 (convict the world of sin, rghts, jdg)

THE HOLY SPIRIT HIS ROLE IN CONVERSION
Is there a relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Word? We have already examined and determined that the gifts of the Holy Spirit would cease when the complete revelation of God was made known to man. That this happen when inspired men recorded for us, in words, what we now have as our bible.
We should appreciate the fact that God, in His wisdom, did not rest the power of salvation in the gifts of the Spirit, but rather in His word – the preaching of the gospel. James 1:21 – “able to save your soul” 1 Pt 1:22-23 – “born again…by the word of God” 1 Cor 15:1-4 – “the gospel…by which you are saved” Rom 1:16 – “gospel is God’s power unto salvation”

THE HOLY SPIRIT HIS ROLE IN CONVERSION
Is there a relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Word? Jesus said in Jn 6:63 “the words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit, and are life.

Notice some similar passages from Ephesians and Colossians.

Eph 5:18-19
And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit; 19 speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.

THE HOLY SPIRIT HIS ROLE IN CONVERSION
The Holy Spirit and the word of God are the same in conversion. Whatever the Spirit does in conversion – so does the word of God. The word of God is the agency or instrument of the Holy Spirit in convicting and converting the sinner.
