As per Section 5 of the Indian Electricity (Supply) Act 1948, Electricity Boards came into existence in India in the Year 1954. In Maharashtra, Maharashtra State Electricity Board was formed in 1960. For the past 45 years the Maharashtra State Electricity

Board has successfully carriedout the work of Generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. In the course of time electricity act 2003 was made applicable by the central government and the Maharashtra State Electricity Board was divided in four Government owned Companies.
1. M.S.P.G.C.L. (Generation) 2. M.S.E.T.C.L.(Transmission) 3. M.S.E.D.C.L. (Distribution) 4. M.S.E.B. HOLDING COMPANY. The work of transmission of electricity power generated by generating Station to the distribution Company is entrusted to M.S.E.D.C.L. For the purpose of transmission of power, at present, the transmission company is having transmission lines of 66 KV and above and also to load dispatch centres. The Maharashtra grid of power is controlled by load dispatch centres. The work of distribution of electricity to the consumers is done by the distribution company. As per the changes in the electricity act the distribution company shall be responsible for the distribution losses. From this view it is necessary to clamp and implement the work. While working in distribution company it is expected to bring down the distribution losses and to remove obstacles from availability of electricity Supply. For achieving the targets it is absolutely necessary update our knowledge and to work hard. Goals of Electricity Companies :- Continious supply to the consumers : 1. At proper voltage and tariffs – Planning and implementation of schemes for the same. i) To generate adequate electric power (Generation) ii) Transmission of electricity (Transmission). iii) Distribution of electricity to the consumers (Distribution). iv) Billing and recovery of bills for electricity used. … … …. Sub-Stations in Maharashtra : Electricity is generated at 11Kv to 15Kv voltage. If it is transmitted at the low voltage upto the consumers ,there will be huge line loss. Line loss is Proportional to the area of cross section of the conductor and the current flow. If voltage is increased, the current is reduced for transmission of same amount of power. And therefore for transmitting the power generated, voltage is increased. This voltage can be steped up or steped down at sub-stations, as per requirement of utilization. Sub-transmission lines are then taken out from sub-station. Their voltages can also be changed as required then onwards HT distribution lines are taken out. The voltage of the HT Lines is further reduced upto 440 volts and low voltage lines are then used for distribution of power to general consumers. The Station (location) where voltage is steped up or steped down is called a sub-stationn Types of Lines 1. L.T. Distribution : Low Voltage Single Phase 230 Volts and medium voltage 3 Phase 400 Volts 2. H.T. Distribution : High voltage line – 11KV to 33 KV 3. Sub-Transmission : Extra High Voltage Line 66 kV to 110 kV . 4. Transmission lines 132 KV to 400KV .

Types of Sub-Stations are as follows : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Major Sub-Station : Incomming transmission line voltages are 66 KV and above. Minor Sub-Station : Incomming transmission line voltage is below 66KV. Stepup Sub-Station: Sub-Station in which voltage is increased. These are generally located near generating station. Stepdown sub-station: In this sub-station voltage is reduced. Switching Station : In this sub-station voltage is not changed only nos. of feeders are increased.

In Maharashtra, the Electricity Board has achieved major progress from its formation. It ranks first in India. The progress achieved by the Board as on 31-122004, in brief , is as shown below : Installed Generating capacity : 14363.6 MW. Nos. of consumers : 1,35,32,398. Installed Electricity Generating Capacity of Maharashtra State (as on March,2004) in MW .
