Competition Guidelines Social entrepreneurship is changing the nature of modern business. Thus, as a prelude to the 5 th Annual Intercollegiate Business Convention (IBC), Harvard University Women in Business (HUWIB) is launching its first Social Enterprise Business Plan Competition. The winner will have the opportunity to present her idea at the Convention, gain exposure through IBC promotional materials and other media outlets, and receive coaching in a private conference with Convention keynote, Priya Haji, co-founder of World of Good by eBay. All competition participants will win access to an exclusive networking event with company recruiters on November 7 th. The only prerequisites are registration at IBC and the submission of this completed Competition application, which includes a business plan template, to HUWIB.IBC2009.sebpc@gmail.com by October 25th. We welcome Competition applications from individuals or teams with up to three members. All competition participants must be female undergraduates. Competition Criteria As defined by Harvard Business School Professor Jane C. Wei-Skillern, social entrepreneurship is “innovative, social value-creating activity that can occur within or across the nonprofit, government, or business sectors.”1 Submissions will be judged by Priya Haji on the originality of ideas and the clarity of presentation. Business plan ideas do not necessarily have to address women’s issues. Important Dates and Deadlines October 25th Competition Deadline Midnight Send this completed Competition application to HUWIB.IBC2009.sebpc@gmail.com th October 30 Competition Results 10:00pm Receive e-mail notification from HUWIB Business Education Committee regarding the Competition results, as determined by Priya Haji  Winner receives business plan PowerPoint presentation template and instructions on presenting at IBC.  First and second runner up receive instructions on where to collect certificate at IBC  All competition participants receive networking reception invitation November 7th IBC (Westin Hotel) 12:00pm Priya Haji delivers keynote address 1:00pm Priya Haji presents certificates to winner, first runner up, and second runner up Social Enterprise Business Plan Competition winner presents to the entire convention 1:15pm Private conference between winner and Priya Haji Competition participants attend an exclusive networking reception with 5:00pm company recruiters

Business Plan Template The following is a template and guide for the five sections of the business plan. Please make sure final submissions address all of the bullet points per section and comply with the given word limits. Please submit in .doc format. Executive Summary (200 – 300 words)  Mission statement Briefly state the value proposition of your project in terms of what it will do, for whom, and what positive impact will result. Stage of Development (200 – 300 words)  Origins and inspiration for idea  History and progress If this is an existing project, please list the date of inception, any student organizations that are affiliated, any awards won, and any progress made thus far if applicable. If not an existing project, please list inspiration for the idea Target market (200 – 300 words)  Who will this help?  Why does this target market need help? Describe broader characteristics of the demographic relevant to the social enterprise and where the target market fits in. Impact (200 – 300 words)  Give a detailed description on how the social enterprise idea will help the target market. List the structure of the enterprise, timeline for growth, and explanation of how the social enterprise will benefit the target market in the short term and long term.
