CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Employment opportunities exist in the hairdressing industry as a salon assistant or you may enter into the hairdressing industry as an apprentice and continue on with training as a second-year apprentice.

CERTIFICATE IN HAIRDRESSING

If you like working with people and want a career that’s all about style, then your introduction to the hairdressing industry starts with the Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 2). You will develop a solid grounding in the skills required to work in a salon support role, including elementary hairdressing and make-up services, as well as professional customer service skills needed in a salon environment. You will develop your technical and artistic skills and develop a portfolio of work as you learn about styling, colouring and cutting. Under the guidance of our hairdressing tutors you’ll work on real clients in our salons, sample the industry first-hand with work experience and participate in hairdressing competitions. This programme gives you credit for the first year of a hairdressing apprenticeship. Advance your learning and experience in hairdressing with the Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3). The equivalent of the second year of an apprenticeship, you will gain more complex skills including styling, complex colour techniques, and develop your communication and customer service skills to enhance the consultation process. Learn how to adapt your skills to create a range of styles and build up a portfolio of work to showcase your achievements throughout the year. In WelTec’s CentreStage salon you will work with clients at a more advanced level of cutting, colouring and styling. You will also have the opportunity to gain work experience and to sharpen your competitive edge at industry level at hairdressing and photographic competitions.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To enter into this programme you will need a minimum of 8 credits from NCEA level 1 in literacy and a minimum of 8 level 1 credits in numeracy. If you are 20 years of age or older at the time you start your studies, you may apply to WelTec under special admission criteria. If English is your second language, a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent is required. FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS On completion of this programme you may continue with your studies into the Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To enter into this programme you will need a minimum of 5 credits from NCEA level 1 in English, visual arts, science or equivalent or an equivalent qualification, or demonstrated experience in a hairdressing or beauty salon. If you are 20 years of age or older at the time you start your studies, you are able to apply to WelTec under special admission criteria. If English is your second language, a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent is required. FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS On completion of this programme you may continue with your studies with the Certificate in Hairdressing (Levels 2-3) or Diploma in Beauty Therapy (Level 5).

If English is your second language, a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent is required. FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS On completion of this programme you may continue with your studies with the National Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 4) as part of an apprenticeship.

With the Certificate in Make-up Artistry (Level 3) you will gain a wide range of skills in make-up artistry and hairdressing. With a focus on film and TV work you will learn core essential make-up applications, hair styling and special effect techniques. Enhance your artistic ability, eye for colour, and learn how to work to a creative brief. Designed for those interested in pursuing a career as a beauty therapist, the Diploma in Beauty Therapy incorporates the City and Guilds Diploma in Beauty Therapy, Certficate in Beautician Services, Diploma in Beauty Therapy and includes a CIDESCO International Diploma, so that you will be well equipped for a successful career here in New Zealand or further afield. In our fully functional Beauty Therapy Clinic you will develop your knowledge of anatomy, physiology therapy and body therapy, build up product knowledge and develop your consultation skills. Students enrolled in this programme can exit after one year at beautician level with the City & Guilds Diploma in Beauty Therapy. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To enter into this programme you will need a minimum of 50 credits from NCEA level 2, including 10 literacy and 10 science credits or equivalent. If you are 20 years of age or older at the time you start your studies, you are able to apply to WelTec under special admission criteria. If English is your second language, a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent is required.
