Advice To Musicians The following are suggestions to ensure quality front-of-house and foldback mixes. 1. Do sing directly into the microphone. Vocalists singing too far away from the microphone may result in feedback when the sound engineer tries to compensate by increasing the levels at the desk i.e. the closer the better in a live situation. Do not point microphones at speakers – feedback will result. Do not cover the microphones with your hand - feedback will result. Guitar amps must be set as soft as possible in order to maintain stage dynamics. If the stage sound is cluttered by loud distorted guitar amps, singers will not be able to hear and the mix at front-of-house will be washed out. Where possible, keep your body between the vocal microphone and drum kit when singing to cut down on drum spill. Tune your instruments and be in tune with each other - judges do notice.

2. 3. 4.

5. 6.

Judging Criteria Judges will be assessing bands according to the following criteria: 1. 2. 3. 4. Stage Presentation - quality of presentation, originality and total effect Musical Presentation – arrangement, level of feeling, and quality Original compositions – bands not performing original compositions will not receive a score for this category. Remember also judges come from the music industry so currentness of your sound and potential for commercial success may be underlying considerations in final discriminating amongst bands. This is more a speculative comment rather than fact however.

Bands are provided with comments from judges for their consideration after the competition. Should you have any questions in relation to any of the above formation, please contact Alan Smith on 9758 2800 or email alan.smith3@det.nsw.edu.au Good luck to all performers in YOUTHROCK 2007. 9/13

Getting your supporters to YouthRock
The Motor Accidents Authority (MAA) is the major sponsor of Youth Week in NSW and YouthRock (under the youth banner ‘Arrive alive’).

The MAA wants to encourage supporters of competing bands to attend YouthRock and has recognised that travelling to YouthRock can be difficult for students outside the Sydney metropolitan area.

As a result the MAA is inviting schools to apply for Arrive alive YouthRock Bus Grants (to a maximum of $500) to enable schools to provide safe transport to and from YouthRock heats.

As you have been successful in being selected to compete in the YouthRock 2007 Band Competition you will be sent an Application Form for the Arrive alive YouthRock Bus Grants.

Good luck!
