Western Australia, the jewel of Australian states is rich with natural resources such as diamonds, gold and pearls and its capital city, Perth, displays them proudly. The discovery of these precious resources reflects the natural beauty of the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean, the radiance of the West Australian sunshine and the creativity of the design which wraps our youthful city.

1850 – Discovery of the Pearl
Pearling began in Western Australia in the 1850’s at Shark Bay. The English, Europeans, and Japanese were drawn to the discovery and spent hours under the waters of the Indian Ocean near Broome diving for shells. In 1861 the largest pearl oyster shell in the world “The Pinctada Maxima” was discovered. This resulted in the birth of the popular Australian South Sea Pearls.

DISCOVERY OF PRECIOUS METALS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

1890 – Discovery of Gold
In the late 1890’s gold was discovered in Kalgoorlie. The discovery of this precious metal continued through to Coolgardie, where Paddy Hannan is reported to have discovered eight pounds of gold nuggets. By 1902 the area surrounding Kalgoorlie became known as “The Golden Mile” and was recognised as the richest square mile of gold reserves in the world.

1970 – Discovery of Diamond
Although gold explorers had stumbled upon diamonds in the past it was not until 1979 that geologists discovered the Argyle Diamond pipe that diamond mining. Currently, Western Australia’s Argyle lamproite pipe is the world’s largest producer of diamond by volume. The Perth Mint was one of the first buildings entered on the State’s heritage register. Inside the Perth Mint you will discover a treasure trove of gold, silver and platinum coins, natural gold nuggets, a exquisite range of fine gold and white gold jewellery, precious stones and an exclusive range of gifts and souvenirs.

Originally men were the first to wear jewellery as a status symbol and a good luck amulet to assist them in battle. KORO

Koro started in Perth as a small wholesale jewellery manufacturing company run by two brothers, Werner and Michael Dieckmann. As their jewellery became more popular, the pair expanded the business into the retail market and opened Koro Fine Australian Jewellery in 1998. Koro is a design house specialising in individually crafted fine hand-made pieces of precious jewellery.

Mazzuchelli’s, was established in Lane Street, Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The company began as a partnership between Matthew Mazzuchelli, a watchmaker and Sam Downes, a jeweller. Mazzuchelli’s offer an extensive range of diamond, pearl and precious gemstone jewellery. They are stockists of the exquisite Love and Passion Collections and specialise in the finest Swiss watch designs.

On display is a range of historical photos featuring the pearling pioneers of Broome – now one of the most famous pearling towns in the world. There is an audio visual presentation that shows visitors some of the current production techniques and the grading methods now used by pearl farmers and traders. The jewellery designers use white and gold South Sea Pearls from Broome, black pearls from Tahiti, beautiful white diamonds and natural coloured diamonds when creating their majestic jewellery pieces.

Costello’s is an Australian family owned business that has specialised in unique Australian gemstones for three generations. It was first established as the Koala Opal Centre in 1955, with the founder John Costello pioneering the export of Australian rough opal to Japan.
