Publisher’s Foreword On Sunday, November 30, 2008 Brother Virgil L Killebrew was added to the Monroe Street Church of Christ. He was received with outstretched arms and unfeigned Love by all the congregation of The Church of Christ. Brother Virgil has been and continues to be richly blessed by the church through its members. To memorialize his rst year as a member Brother Virgil has developed this publication, The Journey, as his way of giving something back to all the members of the church. Many members of the congregation honored Brother Virgil by signing the bible he received from the Church after his baptism. In this fourth issue of The Journey are some of those signatures, with sincere apologies to those whose signatures could not be included because of space limitations. Thanks for all the Love Monroe Street. - Brother Virgil L Killebrew

Church Doctrine

What Is The Church of Christ?
The Church of Christ is not a denomination. We are a fellowship of
Christians who want to understand and do the Will of God. We limit ourselves by the Word of God; therefore, we do not interpret The Word through traditional ideologies . We are not bound to any man made creeds or traditions, nor do we force our beliefs upon others. Our Lord expects us to look beyond historical positions and ideas which con ict with Scripture. Therefore, our concern always is “What does the Bible say about the matter?”

Our Mission is to serve Christ and the Community by Faith to secure our
future Today. We will achieve our Mission by becoming God focused Christians through worship, fellowship, discipleship, and evangelism. We Welcome visitors as Honored Guests.

If you have any questions regarding our Teachings, our Worship
services or our Schedule please ask any Usher for The Church of Christ Visitor Information Package.

“Michelle and James “Fats” Harmon: “Harmons in Harmony”
“Got Fun?” Is your life is dull and uninspiring? Are you easily bored? Are you having any fun? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you need to hang out with the Harmons for a while. They will get you right back into the groove. They always have on hand an abundant supply of good clean FUN! And they will gladly share some of their fun with a funstarved world. of her life. She was baptized at age nine. “Fats” became a member in 1995. He was baptized on February 19, 1997. He had no prior Christian Experience, and it is strongly suspected that he was in pursuit of Michelle when he found himself being pursued by God. It is probable that these two “Love Pursuits” changed Fats’ life for the better. Both agree that their experience at Monroe Street Church of Christ is special to them. They find the fellowship of the saints and the preached Word of God strong inducements for their worship and spiritual life. They also cite the influence of Michelle’s father, church Treasurer Mack Cummins, as a tie that binds them to the church. Brother Mack Cummins, you may know, is also partial to a little fun. “Fats” and Michelle have been married for eight years, but they have been having fun together for 16 years. Mack Cummin’s family is from the state of Mississippi, as is “Fats” ’; however, Michelle’s mother is from Tennessee.

“. . .like a lion surveying his domain he rises, showers, dresses. . . . . . and the FUN begins! ”
Even hobbled as he is by a pair of crutches, Brother Harmon knows exactly where fun is to be found. He He refuses to let such things as fractured bones, frayed nerve endings, and the distractions of work and family detract from his enthusiastic enjoyment of life, love and laughte On any given Sunday morning at the Harmon house Michelle Harmon rises to help their children, son JayJay, and daughter Maya get dressed for church. Anyone who has had the experience of rousing sleepy-headed children from sleep on Sunday morning after a fun-filled Saturday night knows what a challenge that is. Meanwhile James Harmon, bka “Fats,” waits until they are finished with their preparations. Then, like a lion surveying his domain he rises, showers, dresses -and the FUN begins! It is not necessary to be present in their home to imagine how their life must be. The fun they have together at home follows them out of the home, and like an adopted child it goes with them wherever they go. This Inbred happiness is reflected in the faces of their children JayJay, Maya, and Misha (?) (when she is home). Fats and Michelle are raising their children to Love God, respect the Church and to have fun in life and in living. Michelle has been a member of the Monroe Street Church of Christ all

“They will soon get tired of hearing my voice . . . .”
The Harmon family has lived in their present home since 1996. They say the like the area where they live because of the diversity of the neighborhood, the quality of education offered in the schools, and its relative nearness to their places of work. Their home offers them some creature comforts for when they want to be together as a family, but when she needs some time to withdraw from child (and husband) rearing, Michelle prefers the solitude of her bedroom. “Fats,” on the other hand, is happy in any room where there is a television set. Fats and Michelle have different theories and approaches to child rearing. Michelle says she fusses them into obedience when she wants them to do something. “They will soon get tired of hearing my voice and do what I ask them to do.”

“Fats,” apparently a fan of the ‘Old School’ says children should be beaten on a regular basis, just in case the have done something that you don’t know about. “I just walk up and smack ‘em,” he says. It would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for anyone to believe that. He may threaten corporal punishment, but it is highly unlikely that he has had to resort to such tactics considering the adoration and love that his children obviously have for him and he for them. As for that ‘nagging thing’ that Michelle does, well . . . Good Luck with that! “Fats” and Michelle agree that the birth of their children were times of great joy for them. In blessing their children, as the Patriarch Jacob blessed the children of Israel, they prophesy wisdom, financial security, and prosperity in all of their endeavors. And Fun! Lots of Fun! The Harmon’s spend most of their free time with Michelle’s family because Fats doesn’t have any family in Chicago. Their most recent family reunion was a lakefront gathering in 2004 where tons of fun was had by all. Michelle attended Oak Park and River Forest schools and had wanted to be a teacher. She says that she realized that something different was in her future when she was working on her first job at Venture Stores, Inc., a leading regional discount chain. She now works for Blue Cross - Blue Shield as a Customer Service Representive. “Fats” also worked for a while at Venture Stores, Incl. But he says that his first real job was working at a Consumer Appliances dealership doing what he has always liked to do: working with his hands and figuring out what makes things tick. He now works as a warehouse manager for a major photographic supplies manufacturer / distributor. He loves his job so much that he goes to work on crutches. That’s dedication. Although “Fats” and Michelle are lightyears away from retirement themselves, they did offer their insights as to why some people who have worked all of their lives are reluctant to retire. Fats said they don’t want to retire

“ . . .because they want or need something to do to keep them busy.” Michelle spoke of a man who had been at her place of work for thirty-seven years. “If he couldn’t come to work he wouldn’t know what to do with himself,” she said. But “Fats” knows what he would do. He is planning to retire early, at age fifty to pursue his dream. “I want to travel,” he said. “I want to buy myself an RV and hit the road.” He and Michelle might just load an iPod with some of their favoritemusic from the eighties some New Edition for Michelle and some R-U-N DMC for “Fats” - and ride off into the sunset, or wherever. Driving is their preferred method of travel because of the opportunity to do some sightseeing along the way. The destination is not as important as having fun along the way. Their most recent vacation was in May of this year (2009). They went to Florida.

“I just walk up and smack ‘em. . .”
Michelle said that she has always wanted to visit Mexico. “Fats” said the foreign country he wanted to see was Cancun. When Michelle explained that Cancun was in Mexico he seemed either unimpressed or unconvinced. We moved on to our final question: ‘When did you take your first airline trip and where did you travel to?’ “Fats” recalls a flight to Las Vegas, and admits that he was on pins an d needles all the way. Michelle took her first plane ride when she was five years old and went to see here brother’s graduation from Military Training in California. “Fats” describes hiomself as Fun-loving, considerate, and affectionate. Michelle says she is Reserved and Friendly and that she is a Planner. Brother Mack Cummins suggests ‘Plotter’ - but that’s personal, between a father and a daughter.
