Welcome and Introduction.
Thanks for choosing the V5-W450 Amp-top. This product has been built from the best components available, and assembled by our highly qualified staff and has finally passed through our vigorous test, conducted by an experienced technician. This should ensure a long operational life, with a minimum of service and maintenance needed.

The Greengrove product line is aimed at professional bass players. We designed this amp-top to as compact as possible and low weight, in consideration of the performance of the MOSFET power amp, five valve Pre-amp section and Power Supply Unit (PSU). The functionality in front has been optimised for easy of use in a logical, from left to right signal direction. This amp has a gain, 3 band EQ plus filters and a master level providing the functions necessary for most applications.

The block diagram gives a detailed description of signal routing, especially with respect to the external connections. Take some time out to read this guide. It will reveal many details of the amp, and answer many questions.

QUICK START
Press the mute switch, to un-mute the amplifier. (Green indication from the LED above the input connector). The amplifier will remain in mute after the power-up sequence, until un-muted on front or by the remote pedal. Please note, if only one of the inputs are used, this will be detected and selected as the input source, and the A/B switch on the amp and remote pedal will have no effect.

Getting hooked up

Connect the V5-W450 amplifier to mains, using the appropriate mains cord supplied with the amp. Check the voltage setting (110v/230v) on the amp, and mains cord complies with local standards. It is strongly recommended, to connect the amp to a mains socket with earth. Connect one or more speakers using the speakon outputs on the rear. The combined ? parallel load must be no less than 2 ohms. Use quality speaker cable, minimum 1.5 mm? (16 AWG). Then finally connect the instrument to one of the input on the front, if only one of the input are used, the amp will select it as default. Use a good quality mono cable for pas sive instruments and battery powered active instruments. Use stereo cable for instruments powered by the provided DC supply, from the amp. A stereo jack inserted will be recognized and startup the phantom power out to the instrument through the ring of the Jack plug. (Greengrove’ product series of active preamps are compatible with this s phantom power.) Set the gain around 11 o’ clock, and the master at a lower level. Leave the EQ’ in mid s positions. Especially when playing a passive bass, one may beneft from deep switch. Try also the i bright switch, for a more crispy tone. Now try out the EQ’ first leave the mid EQ flat, and work around the bass and treble s, controls. In a set-up with a good bass with fresh strings, and high quality bass cabinet, much equalisation is rarely required. If the cabinet is fitted with tweeter, it will in general not be necessary to raise the treble level. The mid control is semi-parametric, gain boosting and cutting combined with center frequency sweep from 200 – 3000 Hz, 800 Hz at mid position. The maximum cut/boost is about 9 dB.

Connecting the remote/tuner pedal

Connecting the tuner-remote pedal, can be done even while the amp is switched on, in this case it may take a few second for pedal unit power up and synchro ise with the amp. n For details please refer to the appropriate tuner-remote pedal’ section. s

Using the line connections

The lineout The lineouts can be used for either live or in studio. Switch to either a pre- or postequaliser, when selecting the pre-EQ output, only the bright, deep and gain control will affect the signal. In post-EQ position both effect loop, if active, and the equaliser stage will be in the signal path as well; this means that line out signal has been through all five valves, instead of only two in the pre-EQ position. The signal in both the un-balanced jack connector and the balanced XLR connector are identical. The balanced output has a separated electronically driver stage, protected against up to 55Volts phantom supplies, while being fully functional. A ground lift is provided for balanced output, and may be used for eliminating ground loops in balance a set up. The level control is common for both outputs. The Ext. tuner out The Ext. tuner output is taken prior to gain, and is only affected by the deep and bright switches. This is a general-purpose output, and can serve atuner lineout. The effect loop The effect send signal is taken just after the gain control. The return goes straight to the EQ section. (Send may be used as an extra lineout). Please note: It is not possible to activate the effect loop, without a jack plug inserted in the return socket. Designed this way is to eliminate faults. The master lineout The master line output is intended for driving an external power-amp; this output is taken after the master level potentiometer.

Using the speaker outputs

The two speakon? connectors are wired in parallel. The combined parallel load must be no less than 2 ohms. Greengrove has chosen Speakon connectors forthe speaker output due to much higher signal transfer. A traditional Jack connector is designed, and should only be used for smallsignal transfer and never as a speaker plug.

Design philosophy

The V5-W450 is a high-end amp-top, designed for profession use. It is built from the al best part available; to ensure best possible sound quality and long maintenance free operating life. The amp is based on hybrid design, combining a five valve Pre-amplifier stage, MOSFET Power amplifier output stage. The amp is controlled by an embedded micro-controller but only controlled meaning all audio are purely analogue. The Power supply is regulated, both for the solid-state and valve section. One input signal from either of the two input signals is r uted to the input stage, via a o relay. The input stage consists of two double triode valves. This section provides a linear gain of 12 dB, with both deep and bright switch off. Due to high headroom, inherited from high voltage in the valve-amp, there is no need for an “ active input”or –10 dB switch. The deep and bright switch gives a boost of +8 dB @ 40Hz and +6 dB @ 4500 Hz respectively. The output is finally feed though the gain attenuator, except for the signals for internal, external tuner circuitry, peak-detector, with is taken prior to the attenuator. The output from the attenuator is routed to the equaliser section; thelineout pre EQ and the effect send circuitry. The equaliser consists of 3 double triodes. The first three triodes form the main sig nal path, in the middle equaliser, in conjunction with a solid -state, state-variable filter, build around high quality low noise audio op -amps. This means: with mid. level in neutral position, only negligible part of the signal would bee through solid -state part of circuit. The output from the mid. Eq. Valve stage is lead to the input on the Bass/Treble Eq. Valve

amplifier stage, with is very similar to the previous stage. The Bass Eq uses one low noise audio op-amp in gyrator coupling, rather than using a large inductor being sensitive to hum. The treble circuit contains only passive components, and is coupled in parallel with the bass-filter. The overall gain for the equaliser stage is 10 dB. The output is finally lead to the master attenuator, via mute switch, using state of the art click-free audio switch IC’ The post Eq lineout is taken just prior to master potentiometer. Both s. lineouts are send to the rear board, via click-free audio switches too. The rear board contain all external connections for lineouts, effect loop and tuner-remote interface. Lineout buffers are all build low noise op-amp, all output has separate op -amp, separating all loads. The balanced -output is based on a balanced audio, line driver IC, specially designed for driving long capacitive cables, at high levels, while maintaining low distortion through out the whole audio band. The balanced output is coupled in a pseudo transformer circuit, further more has the line-amp been protected against reverse DC phantom power up to 55 volts. The Power-amp The Power amplifier section, are containing 6 large-reservoir capacitors in the power supply, giving added power in low impedance loads. The Power amp is built discrete, the differential input stage and the driver stage are made with bipola transistors. The power r stage is based on 12 power MOSFET’ The Power amp is fitted with “ s. Overtemperature and DC error protection” surveilenced by a microprocessor wich control the fan speed. Short-circuiting the output at high levels, will blow the fuses on the Power amp supply board, and the amp will be going into “ shut down protection”mode. Meaning you need to unplug the power cable to the V5 -W450 and replace the fuses.

The Control-logic, Power-supply and Interface section The “ Power Supply”section is based on 650VA toriod transformer. It has its own separate windings for each circuit sections giving less interference from each circuit. A 250V winding drives the anode voltage for the valves, through a high voltage linear regulator to ensure noiseless power supply. The V5-W450 amplifier is controlled by PIC microcontroller The PIC controls analogue input routing, the temp-sense for fan speed, tuner, valid-power sense circuitry, sense inputs from connectors, switches and controlling the Phantom DC drive circuits for the input jack sockets. Furthermore the PIC handles the serial communication, to the tunerremote pedal to ensure the pedal only remotely controls the amp and no audio signals are being routed through the tuner-remote pedal, to avoid signal distortion.

Mechanical construction

The main case is a rigid and lightweight unit. When assembled with the top cover , the Power amp is mounted on an aluminium profile, serving as the centre core of the heat sink, where the power MOSFETs and high power components are mounted. This construction also provides additional mechanical strength and thermal connection to the case, giving the benefit to make the fan running at lower RPM. The Pre -amp main board is mounted through eight rubber grommets to re duce micro phony. (mechanical noise transferred into electric noise in the valves.)
