Server system consolidation has for a long time been a trend in IT, and is a
viable step in reducing physical hardware footprint, while increasing systems
utilization and reducing power consumption. Many competing technologies for
virtualization of data-center systems exist, and choosing the correct one for a
given workload is not necessarily a simple task.
So far, there has existed no publicly available method for uniformly stress test-
ing and benchmarking virtualization technologies. That is what the IT de-
partment of Gjøvik University College wants remedied through this bachelor
Develop a (quantitative) method for benchmarking virtualization technology
through stress-testing Virtual Machine engines using measurements including
(but not limited to) guest-os performance, I/O- and Virtualization engine load.
The test method developed should use workloads from both Windows and Linux
guest operating systems, and should be repeatable, and preferably fully auto-
The developed method for stress-testing shall be applicable to the following Vir-
tual Machine engines (in order of priority), with the goal of doing quantitative
and qualitative evaluation of characteristics:

   • VMware ESXi 4.0
   • Citrix XenServer 5.5
   • VMware Server 1.x
   • Xen 3 ( on CentOS 5
   • VMware ESXi 3.5
   • Xen 3 on Debian 5
