Tips I've Gleaned from My Students center doc

TIPS I’VE GLEANED FROM MY STUDENTS All of the extremely successful students seem to take advantage of one very important “value-added” aspect of Baylor: the opportunity to establish special relationships with key professors in their fields of interest. These professors will give you academic advice and direct you to the resource people you need to meet or books you need to read. Of course, you should always be respectful of people’s time; most professors are exceedingly busy. Still, almost everyone at Baylor is welcoming when you come by to ask follow-up questions after class. From those conversations, many professors will help you maximize your time at the university. In some cases, students and professors develop life-long friendships. ACADEMIC RESOURCES Note the librarian who helps you search out the tools you need in the library. Return to that person whenever you need to. Baylor has librarians who care and fabulous databases to help you find the information you need. (“Google” is not the research tool for all seasons.) Tell the chair or a professor in your major that you would like to begin doing research. Take a challenging course that is taught by a professor whose ideas make you work hard, think hard. Consider enrolling in a freshman seminar. There are two types: the FYS 1399 classes are available for Honors. The FAS 1302 will substitute for ENG 1302. Take an upper-level course that expands your ability to write in your field. In Richard Light’s Making the Most of College, studies show the relationship between the amount of writing for a course and the students’ level of engagement in the course was stronger than their engagement in other courses—whether measured by the amount of time spent, the degree to which one liked the professor, the intellectual challenge, or even just how much the student liked doing the work. Visit the Baylor Writing Center to receive expert help with a writing project. Details at http://www.baylor.edu/english/index.php?id=12534 Talk to the International Programs Office about options for studying abroad. Apply for the Goodrich Scholarship through Baylor. See details on these options at http://www.baylor.edu/cie/index.php?id=1731 Ask your favorite professor in your major if she needs an assistant. Or contact Sally Firmin and volunteer to become a Supplemental Instructor for a course. http://www.baylor.edu/support_programs/index.php?id=22921 Use your summers wisely. Research an internship program by talking to the career center or one of your favorite professors. (Internship applications are usually due in Dec. /January.) Recognize your need to take a prep-course for the LSAT. Consider the Princeton Review and maybe the Baylor Review, too. Step up to these courses the way you approach any college challenge. Read the pre-law tips at http://law.baylor.edu/new_prosp_students/thinking.htm And remember, you’ve got to do your homework on professional programs and pay your dues to the vital assessments that stand between you and your dream. OTHER OPPORTUNITIES TO CONSIDER Look over the list of academic and social clubs available at Baylor. Some of those organizations are listed at http://www.baylor.edu/arts_sciences/index.php?id=22378 . Ask yourself, “Is being in a club right for me?” If so, take a leadership role in a club. If not, weigh the possibilities of serving in Student Congress, Baylor Ambassadors, or on the Model United Nations team. One of my students who is maximizing her time here is Asian. She joined the Hispanic Club to meet people she would not meet otherwise—and improve her Spanish. Volunteer to be a member of an academic club, such as the Honors Program Advisory team. Join a choir http://www.baylor.edu/music/index.php?id=6981 or attend a concert. Find a church that is right for you. http://www.baylor.edu/um/index.php?id=10506 Visit Armstrong Browning Library, Truett Seminary, or our Law School just for fun! Pick one afternoon a week or a month to volunteer at an agency that needs you—and stay with it for two or three years so that your record shows you have a depth of experience at the animal shelter or credibility as a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. Start reading a newspaper. Write back to a voice that makes sense or you disagree with in the editorial section. Or listen to National Public Radio while you are getting ready to go to class. (Turn off the television if you are watching more than an hour a day.) Figure out something that needs to be done on campus—and take first steps toward addressing the need. One of our students four years ago was concerned that Baylor did not have an undergraduate scholarly journal. He found a professor who shared his concern and a dean who would contribute funds. Voila! The Pulse was born! That initiative has been taken to new heights this year; visit http://www.baylor.edu/pulse/splash.php to learn more. Visit the Hunger Farm or the Waco Wetlands. Ask someone in Environmental Studies for details. http://www.baylor.edu/environmental_studies/index.php?id=%2016513 Go to Baylor’s website on national and international scholarship competitions (for Rhodes, Gates, Marshall, Truman, Soros, Rotary, and many more) at www.baylor.edu/scholarships . Then contact the appropriate campus representative or call me (710 4176) for further help. Consider adding an interesting minor, such as Medical Humanities. Ask about clubs in your major. Don’t know how? One of your professors or someone in Student Life will know. Contact the Dean’s office for your major if you have a question that you cannot answer or an academic concern that needs to be addressed. Even such questions as, “When is the next job fair?” can be researched for you by our offices. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Compiled by Elizabeth_Vardaman@baylor.edu
