Hybrid rice cultivation in Bangladesh is on the increase by almost 100 per cent (contd.)
…..The big disadvantage is that seeds saved by farmers do not yield as much as the
originally imported seeds requiring them to buy fresh HYBRID seeds at the beginning of
each season. Farmers can’t produce their own seeds; because the seed production is
highly technical as well as risky. It may be mentioned that maintenance of three lines
simultaneously is a must to produce hybrid seeds. These three liners are: a male sterile
line called (CMS), a maintainer line and a Restorer line (Rf) to produce seeds. It is hoped
that instead of importing, more and more private seed suppliers will grow their own
hybrid seeds under the guidance of experts in this highly technical field to keep the price
of hybrid seeds within the buying capacity of ordinary farmers.
Since BRRI experts have successfully applied the above techniques to produce its first
hybrid rice seed, BRRI-hybrid Dhan-1 and are about to release three more, GNOBB is
encouraged to propose that BRRI experts demonstrate the techniques after explaining to
the farmers the standard three line strategy as mentioned above and let them practice the
technique in their own field under experts’ supervision until they master the technique.
It may be mentioned here that hybrid rice now covers about 50% of China's rice acreage
and accounts for 60% of the rice production.
