Aspartame: The Sweet Taste of Death
by Qaraandin

Most of us eat whatever is sold in the stores as “food.” The thought that some of those “foods” are actually poisons never crosses our minds. We certainly never think that our dis-eases are the result of the poisons we eat and drink every day. We are told that more and more folk living in the U.S. are overweight. We are also told that if we want to lose weight we should eat “sugar-free” foods and drink “diet” beverages. We are not told that eating and drinking those things may destroy our health. We are not told that eating and drinking these things can kill us. Almost all “sugar-free” and “diet” foods and beverages have aspartame in them. Some of the names aspartame is marked under are NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, Benevia, and Equal Measure. Aspartame is used in over 6,000 products including, but not limited to, pharmaceutical drugs; sugar-free chewing gum; breath mints; multi–vitamins and other supplements; laxatives; diet foods and diet drinks; instant breakfasts; yogurt; wine coolers; instant teas and coffees; cereals; gelatin desserts and frozen desserts. Since aspartame has been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), people think it is safe. The FDA’s internal policy is that it must be established “to the FDA’s satisfaction” that a product is safe for human consumption before that product can be approved. Aspartame was approved even though it was never proven to be safe for human consumption. In fact, when aspartame was approved by the FDA, it was already known to cause seizures and brain tumors in lab animals. Most of us are aware of the many health problems caused by sugar. We thought we were making a wise decision when we switched from sugar to aspartame. We were wrong. In some cases, dead wrong!

In February 1994, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a list of adverse reactions to aspartame that had been reported to the FDA. According to that list, aspartame is the cause of 91 dis–eases, most of them neurological because aspartame destroys the nervous system. According to the list, aspartame also causes death. Some of the dis–eases we have been told are “hereditary” are on the FDA’s list of aspartame–related dis–eases. Alzheimer’s; arthritis; asthma; cancer – particularly of the brain, breast, and prostate; diabetes; epilepsy; high blood pressure; lupus; multiple sclerosis; and Parkinson’s are known to be caused by aspartame. We are beginning to hear a lot about gene research. We are told that if we can just find the genes that cause our “hereditary” dis–eases, we can fix the genes and cure the dis–eases. It never occurs to us that the genes are damaged in the course of creating the dis–eases. Aspartame is know to cause changes in the genes. The FDA admits that aspartame is known to cause obesity. (Yes. The very stuff you are using to keep from gaining weight is making you fat!) The liver works so hard to detoxify aspartame that there is less energy for metabolism, causing craving for carbohydrates. We then wind up with weight gain, bloating and cellulite. There are all sorts of diet products on the market. Yet people continue to gain weight. No one has mentioned that most of the diet products contain aspartame and the aspartame itself causes the weight gain. Hearing loss, memory loss, confusion, vision loss, irritability, personality changes, hair loss, and other “normal signs of aging” have been linked by the FDA to aspartame use. These “normal signs of aging” are starting to show up in younger and younger folk. Could that be because of our diet of instant foods and drinks? Consuming aspartame at the time of conception can cause birth defects. The phenylalanine, one of the amino acids that is an ingredient in aspartame, concentrates in the placenta, causing mental retardation. Children who were given fruit juices laced with aspartame as part of a study developed abnormal restlessness, lack of concentration, irritability and depression. These are common symptoms of what we are told is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). However, instead of prescribing Ritalin for the children in the study, the lead doctor removed the aspartame–laced juices. All symptoms disappeared in 4 to 6 days. Every day we see ads for more drugs to cure our various ills. We do not know that our ills are caused by our use of aspartame. The same companies that produce aspartame also produce the drugs that are sold to “cure” the ills aspartame causes. In fact, some of the drugs have aspartame in them. Aviation magazines all over the world have printed articles warning pilots not to use aspartame. In May 1992, “Flying Safety” the official magazine of the U.S. Air Force warned their pilots not to use Equal in their coffee or drink diet colas because pilots were having seizures in the cockpit. According to that article: “People have suffered disorders with doses as small as that carried in a single stick of chewing gum. Several researchers have found aspartame can increase the frequency of seizures, or lower the stimulation necessary to induce them. This means a pilot who drinks diet sodas is more susceptible to flicker vertigo or to flicker induced epileptic activity. It also means that all pilots are potential victims of sudden memory loss, dizziness during instrument flight and gradual loss of vision.” Pilots have been known to suffer grand mal seizures in the cockpits of commercial planes. At least 5 American Airlines pilots who were heavy aspartame users have died. One died while flying a plane.

It would seem that if pilots are advised not to use aspartame for fear of crashing their planes, then, at the very least, drivers should be warned not to use aspartame for fear of crashing their bicycles, motorcycles, cars, trucks, and buses. Train conductors would be warned against using aspartame for fear of crashing their trains. Heavy equipment operators should be warned against using aspartame for fear of having accidents with their equipment. According to “NutraPoison” by Alex Constantine: “Aspartame is an rDNA derivative, a combination of two amino acids (long supplied by a pair of Maryland biotechnology firms: Genex Corp. of Rockville and Purification Engineering in Baltimore). The Pentagon once listed it in an inventory of prospective biochemical warfare weapons submitted to Congress. But instead of poisoning enemy populations, the “food additive” is currently marketed as a sweetening agent in some 1200 food products.” How do you tell if you are suffering from “Aspartame Dis–ease?” Stop using aspartame for at least 60 days. If your symptoms disappear or your condition improves you will know that aspartame is the cause of your problem. Because aspartame is hidden in so many items, it will take a lot of reading of labels to be sure you are not using it. You will also have to be very careful when you eat out. Aspartame is very addictive. Many people have found that when they stopped using aspartame they suffered from severe withdrawal symptoms that included, among other things, headaches, nausea, and muscle aches. Doctors get most of their information from the same places as their patients. They often suffer from the same dis–eases as their patients and for the same reasons. Most of them are not aware of the danger of aspartame. They never ask their patients if they use aspartame. If you suggest to your doctor that your dis–ease is related to aspartame and you want to get off aspartame for a couple of months just to see what happens, she or he will probably tell you there is no link between the two. We have been programmed to act as if somebody else – the doctor, the government, the drug industry, the food industry – always has our best interest at heart. That is not the case. We can maintain our temples and avoid the dis–eases of affluence that are so common in this country. However, we cannot do it without accepting full responsibility for what goes into our bodies.

Some Reported Adverse Reactions to Aspartame
In February of 1994, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the listing of adverse reactions reported to the FDA (DHHS 1994). Aspartame accounted for more than 75% of all adverse reactions reported to the FDA's Adverse Reaction Monitoring System (ARMS). By the FDA's own admission fewer then ONE PERCENT of those who have problems with something they consume ever report it to the FDA. This balloons the almost 10,000 complaints they once had to around a million....MOST victims don't have a clue that aspartame may be the cause of their many problems! Many reactions to aspartame were very serious including seizures and death. Those reactions included: abdominal pain anxiety attacks arthritis asthma asthmatic reactions bloating, edema (fluid retention) blood sugar control problems (hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia) brain cancer (pre-approval studies in animals) breast cancer breathing difficulties burning eyes or throat burning urination can't think straight chest pains chronic cough chronic fatigue confusion death depression diarrhea dizziness excessive thirst or hunger fatigue feel unreal flushing of face hair loss (baldness) or thinning of hair headaches/migraines dizziness hearing loss heart palpitations hives (urticaria)
