Bill was previously president and owner of Impressions before it was acquired by Apex in 2004. The combination of Impressions' and Apex's expertise and technologies resulted in Apex's TrueXML Workflow, a flexible end-to-end XML-based workflow for editing, composing, and producing both print and electronic books and journals in multiple formats from the same XML source. Past President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing, Bill is a frequent speaker and seminar leader for SSP, as well as for other publishing industry organizations such as Seybold Seminars, the Council of Science Editors, the Library of Congress, and the Association of American University Presses. He served nine years as publisher of The New England Journal of Medicine, was president of Macmillan New Media, president of Cadmus Digital Solutions, and founded and subsequently sold Publist.com, the Internet Directory of Publications. In 1997, Rick established Electronic Publishing Associates, a strategic consulting firm helping publishers investigate, plan and implement electronic publishing initiatives. Over the last few years, Rick has developed specialized expertise in the strategic, technical and operational aspects of providing publishers’ content in formats that are accessible for people with print disabilities (e.g., blindness, learning disabilities). He currently works with K-12 and Higher Ed publishers facing tough legal requirements that their content be made available to students in accessible formats and in a timely manner. A long-time member of the PSP’s Electronic Information Committee and a former president of the Society for Scholarly Publishing, Rick authored the chapter titled “Accessibility” in The Columbia Guide to Digital Publishing, has been a speaker and panelist in many industry conferences, and served on a number of publishing-related advisory boards. Her career spans electronic publishing, book acquisitions, and academia. She has previously held positions at Ingenta, LEA Inc., the University of Pennsylvania, and The MIT Press, where she was an executive editor from 19942000. She received a doctorate in cognitive science from MIT in 1989. He began his career in 1987 as manuscript editor in the Journals Division. As leader of the science team, he developed electronic editing procedures and WordPerfect macros that were used in some dark corners of the Press for more than a decade. In 1994 he joined the fledgling IT department and began working on tools to support SGML-based editorial and production processes. His group has developed software for peer review, conversion of author files, copyediting, typesetting, and electronic publishing. John has also taught several courses in the Publishing Program of the University of Chicago’s Graham School of General Studies and was a co-author of the math and the documentation chapters in the Chicago Manual of Style. Based in New York, Howard is in charge of US operations and has global responsibilities for Print Production and Manufacturing, Web Development, Web Services, Web Production, New Technology and Information Technology across all NPG products. Howard's prior positions include Director, Electronic Publishing & Production for Springer-Verlag New York, as well as the North American Manager for LINK, and a member of the production staff at John Wiley & Sons. He was also active in the establishment of the DOI and the founding of CrossRef. He currently serves as an active member of the CrossRef board and a publishing advisor to CCC and LOCKSS. He is a frequent spokesperson for NPG on a variety of production and new technology themes.
