							Title: Factoring Trinomials with Virtual Algebra Tiles Grade Level: 9th Grade Subject: Algebra 2 Objective: To factor quadratic trinomials using algebra tiles. Procedure: Step 1: Students will go to the following web address: http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/NAV/frames_asid_189_g_4_t_2.html?open=activities&fro m=category_g_4_t_2.html

Step 2: Students will model a quadratic trinomial with their virtual algebra tiles For example, the quadratic trinomial x2 + 2x + 1 will be modeled by 1 – “x squared block”, 2 – “x” blocks, and 1 - “1” block

Step 3: Students will virtually move the blocks around until they have the blocks into a perfect rectangle. Example from above:

Step 4: Students will determine the length and width of the rectangle they made.

Step 5: Students will then write the quadratic trinomial like x2 + 2x +1 in factored form Example: (x+1) (x+1)

Students will need to repeat this process to factor the problems on the worksheet that is attached.
