I am in a valley and you are in a valley.

1. A second way to make a noun definite is to attach a possessive pronoun directly to the end of
the word. When an a possessive pronoun is attached, the definite article, / / must be removed.

       your (f) door

2.
The stand-alone, nominative form for the pronoun 'you' masculine is / / and for 'you'

feminine is / /. The attached, possessive form for the pronoun 'your' is / /. Remember
that this has the sound 'ak' for male singular possessive / / (occasionally pronounced 'ik') and

'ich' for female singular possessive pronoun / / .

3. The stand-alone, nominative form for the pronoun 'I' is / /. The attached, possessive form for
      the pronoun 'my' is //.

4.
/ / and / / both are translated 'with' and are prepositions used for association of people or
things in close personal proximity. It is often used for things you wear or have with you.

5.
/ / is also translated 'with' but is a much broader term, though occasionally there is an overlap

close personal proximity. It is sometimes the equivalent of "chez" in French.

5. Game
Part I -- The teacher takes an object or two from each student (a book, a pen, a paper, etc.) The
student may give an object from the bag instead if they wish. However, the game works better if some
of the objects are the same. The teacher places the items in various places around the room. Students
must remember which things belong to which student. Next, students take turns asking each other
questions such as, ____ .
The other student must answer and point to their object. .

                                                                                                           5

Part II – After every object has been located, they take turns asking each other the opposite question,
such as, ___ and the other student would point and give an answer such as,
. If a student makes a mistake either in fact or in grammar, they should try to answer again.

Part III – Now students can ask each other either type of question. That is about the location of their
own object or about the location of the other student’s object.

6. Communicate

1. Activity -- Name as many Arabic names as you can. The teacher will write them on the board.
First, list all the female names. Then list all the male names. The teacher should think of some other
common names and add them to the list until you have a maximum of twenty of each. Take note of
the spelling of each name.

3. Game
Make two teams. Each team tapes a piece of paper on the board far from the other team’s
paper. One from each team goes to the board to write on the paper, so each team needs a pencil. With
every book and notebook closed, try to remember how to write as many Arabic names as you can.
In turn, each team sends the next person to the board to write a name. The first round of the game is
only girl names. When the person at the board finishes writing a name, he or she returns to the team
and gives the marker to the next one from the team. This continues until one team reaches 15 names.

The teacher says, stop ! and both teams must stop. At this point the teacher looks at the names
and gives a point for each legible and correctly spelled word.
Teammates may help each other by calling out the correct letters to spell the names but must
be careful or the other team will overhear the name. Finally, after you read and understand the
instructions, close this book and play.
         Round two is boy names.

Student Note: This book will sometimes introduce dialogues which are more difficult, such as the
following conversation. The purpose is for you to be exposed to aspects of the language which you
may not fully grasp now, to give you a feel for things to come, and to increase your passive
vocabulary, that is words and expressions you have heard and have a general understanding of.
