• According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the world population is expanding at an
  alarming rate. The world reached 1 billion people in 1800, 2 billion by 1922, and
  over 6 billion by 2000. It is estimated that the population will swell to over 9 billion
  by 2050. That means that if the world’s natural resources were evenly distributed,
  people in 2050 will only have 25% of the resources per capita
• The average American household spends about $1,400 each year on energy bills.
• On an average most large corporations spent about $100 million on energy in
  2006. At the current rate of usage, costs could easily double by 2010.
• Turning off your desktop computer and monitor for two additional hours per day
  could reduce your annual electric consumption by up to 1.5 percent.
• It’s a common misconception that screen savers reduce energy used by monitors.
  This is not true. Automatically switching to sleep mode or manually turning
  monitors off is always the better energy-saving strategy.

Energy Saver Toolkit

• The Energy Saver Toolkit is a free utility that allows system
  administrators to govern power management capabilities of
  all desktop and system monitors throughout their corporate
  environment. Conserve energy, reduce costs, and help
  protect the environment—all from a single familiar Web-
  based console. The toolkit enables administrators to
  designate monitor shut down (sleep) policies at select
  intervals. The result is a low-impact method of conserving
  energy and reducing costs. Shutdown policies for 10-, 15-,
  and 20-minute intervals
• Support for Windows ME/2000/XP/Server 2003
• An Energy Saver Quick Start menu for assisted roll out

 • Default Collection ―Energy Saver Supported Machines‖



 • Energy Saver Inventory
   – Gathers current information about power settings on selected
     machines.
   – Can be used for reporting purposes.

• Once the Inventory task is enabled, the package for the
  toolkit will appear in the Altiris agent.

     • View of Monitor, Standby, Hibernate, Full Wake, Power Scheme in use, Last Logged

Results

• With a shut down of 1 floor of desktop PC’s only.
   – 114 machines were used for testing
   – Estimated savings of only $6.00 for 1 weekend of all machines being shut
     down.
   – Approx savings per PC equals .5 cents a machine.
• Estimate savings for Division
   – $11,663.00 per year for 4000 machines.
   – $32,000.00 per year company wide.
• Shutting down Monitors and PC’s throughout the week (12 hour shut down) will
  yield an approx savings of:
   – $ 320,000.00 per year – 4000 machines
   – 5,213,000.00 per year – 65000 machines
