However the vast majority of this literature deals with the supply of goods rather than services. As the proportion of the economy devoted to services and the growth in the use and delivery of services by manufacturing companies both increase, the need for a coherent approach to service supply chains becomes more crucial. There is increasingly more attention to various aspects of supply chains in services, but it is still fragmented. It includes, purchasing of services, service networks, service oriented software, service outsourcing, modular service designs and two sided service platforms. Part of this fragmentation is due to the heterogeneous nature of services, but part is also due to the limited amount of real managerial or research attention. In this talk, professor Voss will view extant work and propose a framework and an agenda for future research. Biography Chris Voss is Professor of Operations Management at London Business School. He has received many honours including being elected the 2008 Distinguished Scholar by the Operations Management Division of the Academy of Management, and the Chris Voss best paper award at the European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) conference being named to recognize his contribution to that society. Professor Voss has a long record of service to the Operations Management community. He was founder of the European Operations Management Association and was it chair for many years and has life membership of the board. He has been active in POMS including being president of the POMS College of Service Operations and representing EurOMA at POMS board meetings; has organized many meetings and conferences, most recently the POMS College of Service Operations meeting in London. Professor Voss is a leading empirical researcher in Operations Management and has published widely in leading journals such as Production and Operations Management, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Service research, Journal of Product Innovation Management and International Journal of Operations and Production Management. His research has covered a wide range of areas including operations strategy, service operations management and management of innovation and technology. 8 Speech 2: High Performance Manufacturing in the Global Economy Barbara B. Flynn Richard M. and Myra Louise Buskirk Professor of Manufacturing Management Kelley School of Business, Indiana University Barbara B. Flynn Abstract This presentation describes a global research project that has been ongoing for the past 20 years. It seeks to develop a better understanding of high performance manufacturing by examining this phenomenon in an interdisciplinary and cross-functional manner. The history of the project is described, and its methodology is discussed in detail. In addition, three research papers that have resulted from this project are summarized. Biography Barbara B. Flynn is the Richard M. and Myra Louise Buskirk Professor of Manufacturing Management and Director of the Indiana University Center for International Business Education and Research (IU CIBER) at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University. Dr. Flynn has received over $1 million in research funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education and the Center for Innovation Management Studies. Her current research projects deal with the relationship between product innovation speed and quality, and a comparative study of manufacturing best practices in ten countries. She is co-director of the High Performance Manufacturing research group, a joint project between Indiana University and the University of Minnesota, which studies the relationship between manufacturing practices and performance in various organizational and national cultures. Dr. Flynn is former Editor-in-Chief and founding editor of Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, and former Editor-in-Chief of Quality Management Journal. She is an Associate Editor of Journal of Operations Management and Decision Sciences. She serves on the Editorial Review Board of International Journal of Applied Quality Management, Production and Operations Management, and Benchmarking for Quality Management and Technology. Dr. Flynn is a past President of the Decision Sciences Institute and has held leadership positions within the Decision Sciences Institute, Academy of Management, Institute for Management Sciences (TIMS) and American Production and Inventory Control Society. 9 Speech 3: The Service Economy: Interdisciplinary Frontiers for U.S. and Chinese OM and SCM Researchers Vicki L. Smith-Daniels Professor of Supply Chain Management, the W. P. Carey School of Business Arizona State University Vicki L. Smith-Daniels Abstract While trade in manufactured goods is often viewed as the global economic engine, increasingly the United States and China are developing strategic partnerships around the service economy. This presentation highlights the current trade in services between the U.S. and China and identifies areas for growth in key industries such as healthcare, financial services, tourism and hospitality, retailing and wholesale, information technology services, consulting and many others. Results from a recent interdisciplinary research priorities initiative will be discussed and targeted research opportunities explored for potential collaboration. Biography Vicki Smith-Daniels is a Professor of Supply Chain Management the W. P. Carey School of Business and Research Faculty in the Center for Services Leadership at Arizona State University. This talk will address the following issues: • • • • • Why it is important to link supply chain performance to corporate performance Evidence on how supply chain disruptions affect corporate performance Evidence on how the impact of supply chain disruptions is moderated by firm characteristics and competitive environment Implications of the results and evidence in making business case to make supply chains more robust and reliable Potential solutions for reducing the frequency and severity of supply chain disruptions Biography Vinod Singhal is the Dr. Alfred F. and Patricia L. Knoll Professor of Operations Management at the College of Management at Georgia Institute of Technology. The previous research is inconsistent in its findings about the relationship between SCI and performance. We attribute this inconsistency to incomplete definitions of SCI, in particular, the tendency to focus on customer and supplier integration only, excluding the important central link of internal integration. We study the relationship between three dimensions of SCI, operational and business performance, from both a contingency and a configuration perspective. In applying the contingency approach, hierarchical regression was used to determine the impact of individual SCI dimensions (customer, supplier and internal integration) and their interactions on performance. In the configuration approach, cluster analysis was used to develop patterns of SCI, which were analyzed in terms of SCI strength and balance. Analysis of variance was used to examine the relationship between SCI pattern and performance. The findings of both the contingency and configuration approach indicated that SCI was related to both operational and business performance. Furthermore, the results indicated that internal and customer integration were more strongly related to improving performance than supplier integration.
