Short Course in Strategic Management Principles Presented by the Department of Business Management, University of Pretoria 31 August – 3 September 2009 BRIEF DESCRIPTION This course includes basic strategic management principles, skills and tools for middle management and business owners who require knowledge. WHO SHOULD ENROL? The course serves as the introductory course to managers who are faced with strategic issues for the first time or who want to master the principles of the process. Managers from private and public sector as well as small business owners can benefit. PRESENTERS The course will be co-ordinated by Prof Marius Pretorius. COURSE STRUCTURE AND VENUE A four-day course, presented at the University of Pretoria. ASSESSMENT To obtain a certificate issued by the University of Pretoria, candidates should successfully complete assessment(s) prepared according to certain guidelines. COURSE FEE (CE at UP IS EXEMPT FROM VAT) COURSE CONTENT The course content includes: strategy: origins, history and application the process and its elements environmental analysis internal analysis gap analysis generic strategic options specific strategic options selecting the correct strategy implementation of the selected strategy strategic control mechanisms tools for application such as SWOT, Porter, SF’s, BSC, etc leadership during change culture during and after the strategic process LEARNING OUTCOMES On completion of this course, the learner should be able to: - understand and apply the strategic process; - execute the elements of the process such as environmental – internal analysis, etc; - master the use of tools for analysis and - determine relevant strategies: broad and narrow.
