					Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

Ray and Sue Bohlin Probe Ministries

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters The key to raising godly children is to be godly parents. Our job is to accurately represent God as Father. Parents are God to a small child.

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters The goal of spiritual maturity is to become childlike in our faith: dependent trust on our Father.

We model certain attributes of God to our kids

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

I. God is love
3 basic needs of every child: Attention, affection, approval The Father's example: "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

Attention
Just watch your kids play Be there for them: sports, school programs, going to a movie or event your child wants to see Smile and encourage them!

Affection
5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman
Physical touch Words of affirmation Gifts Acts of service Focused attention

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

Approval
Every son longs to hear "I'm proud of you." Every girl longs to hear her father say she's beautiful. Every child needs to hear "I'm so glad God gave you to me!"

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters
Curt Bohlin: “When you know you're loved, you can understand that God loves you. It’s hard to understand God or learn to love him if a kid doesn’t feel loved by his parents.”

Dr. Joseph Nicolosi: Counseled hundreds of gay men, never met one who had a warm, loving relationship with his father.

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters II. God is consistent
Discipline your kids; God disciplines us. Rules and consequences That gives us safety. Analogy: policeman pulling on store doors at night, wanting and hoping to find them locked. If they're open, something is wrong.

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

II. God is consistent
Monitor your kids' friends. "Bad company corrupts good character" (1 Cor. 15:33) Know your child’s personality and susceptibility to peer pressure.

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

III. God is respectful
Don't push or control Give choices Children are not extensions of ourselves Children are not for gratifying our own needs Don't force religion on your kids Commit to not be sarcastic

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

III. God is respectful
No namecalling Don't pick fights Be kind and courteous to each other Don’t show favoritism Kid up, not down

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

IV. God is full of grace, mercy and justice
Justice: Getting what we deserve Mercy: Not getting what we deserve Grace: Getting what we don’t deserve

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

V. God is a communicator
Communicate on a heart-to-heart level. There have been many parents who modeled fine character but didn't communicate with their kids. Listen as well as share Bedtime is a time for opening hearts. Childhood sexual abuse: many parents don’t know Provide a safety net for the “uh-oh” feeling

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

VI. God is truth
Be real. Know your limitations and admit your faults. Ask forgiveness when you sin or make a mistake. Ask for prayer when you need it. Don't pretend to have it all together. Your kids can see you don't.

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

VII. Pray for your kids
Stormie Omartian's The Power of a Praying Parent Karen Scalf Linamen's Parent Warrior: Protecting Your Children Through Prayer Pray Scripture Pray for their future spouses

Raising Godly Sons and Daughters

Pray for your kids
Do battle for them. Take authority over the spiritual forces of wickedness that seek to destroy your children. Pray out loud for them, prayers of thanksgiving as well as petition
