Jonah 2

“three days and three nights”


―They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat—part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived, for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights‖ (1 Sam 30.11-12).

Jonah Prays
 

―each cried [qrh] to his own god‖ (1.5) ―they cried [qrh] to the Lord‖ (1.14) ―I called [qrh] … to the Lord‖ (2.2[3])



God is in control




―you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God‖ (2.6b); ―‗I have been banished from your sight, yet I will look again toward your holy temple‘‖ (2.4). ―You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me‖ (2.3).

Death Imagery


Words like ―depths,‖ ―deep,‖ and ―currents‖ ―which encompasses the petitioner is more reminiscent of the mythical underground rivers of chaos and death which belong to the underworld (Isa. 44:27; Ps. 24:2; 93:3) rather than the Mediterranean‖ (Wolff 1986: 134).
– Jonah feels like he is in the ―grave,‖ in the ―pit,‖ and enclosed by (prison-like) ―bars‖ forever.

Jonah Prays the Psalms


Jonah 2.2-9
– Psalm 18.4-6; 42.7; 31.22; 69.1b-2; 104.6, 8; 88.2; 31.6; 50.23 – ―thanksgiving‖ psalms (Stuart 1987: 472).

Response for Deliverance




―But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good‖ (2.9a-b). ―they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him‖ (1.16b).

Response for Deliverance


―Salvation comes from the Lord‖ (2.9c).
– ―The Hebrew word for ‗deliverance‘ here [in 2.9] is yešû‗ātāh, from yešû‗āh. When the angel announced to Mary that she would have a son, the angel said, ‗You shall call his name Jesus [Heb., yešû‗āh], for he will save his people from their sins‘ (Matt. 1:21)‖ (Limburg 1993: 72).

Projecting into the New Testament

The Sign of Jonah


―[Jesus] answered, ‗A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth‖ (Mt 12.39-40; cf. Mt 16.4).

The Risen Lord Jesus Christ


―He said to them [i.e., disciples], ‗Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things (Luke 24.46-48; cf. Acts 10.40).

The Lord Jesus Christ


―I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?‖ (John 11.25-26).
