Vistar has developed sophisticated surveillance systems which are in service in patrol craft of HM Customs and the US Navy and are on trial with government agencies in other countries. Over 20 systems are in service and Vistar is the leading manufacturer of equipment of this type for small patrol craft. The full specifications for this class of system are restricted but typical systems could comprise a thermal imaging sensor, an image intensification (low light TV) sensor, a daylight television camera, a laser range finder and would be stabilised and capable of being directed from the central control unit or programmed to sweep a predetermined search sector. The Vistar IM405 is able to display two images on one screen for simultaneous viewing of information from different sensors and to overlay position, heading, bearing information and other information on screen or for recording. The system can accept information from ship’s radar and GPS. Naturally this type of system can be used for navigation purposes when not being used for surveillance and such systems include a separate console for use by the helmsman. Other applications V istar Night Vision Limited is essentially a systems house that also designs and manufactures tracker heads, image intensified cameras, control and display units. Vistar does not make thermal imagers but works closely with leading suppliers to integrate their thermal imagers into complete systems. Vistar has completed a number of contracts for specialised systems including fixed and mobile land based systems and systems for control of harbour traffic. Typical applications include perimeter surveillance, security of sensitive locations such as airports and military establishments and use by police and security forces. The system is also suitable for fitting to Land Rovers and command and control vehicles, for mobile land and shoreline surveillance. Fixed land based systems may be used to monitor vulnerable areas such as harbour entrances, sensitive borders and strategic sites such as dams and reservoirs.
