Page 2 Ministries........................................ Page 4 Crosswords with Pastor John Who has gone before you? Happy Thanksgiving! Every time Thanksgiving rolls around I get this image in my mind of the pilgrims. I’m thinking of a painting by Rembrandt of the Cloth Maker’s Guild of Denmark in 1662. Still, this image sort of brings out the pioneer in me. These folks in their black robes and white bibs take me back to a time when people came to a new land with nothing but their dreams of freedom. They not only survived but thrived and built a new life in America. Yes, there were people here before the Pilgrims, the Native Americans, to whom the settlers owed a debt of gratitude for helping them learn the ways of this strange, new land. A debt most paid by stealing their land and killing their people, sadly. No matter how you look at it, there are people who went before us to help us get to where we are. Have you ever thought about who they might be in your life? In the life of Holy Cross? In just a couple of years we will commemorate our 50th anniversary as a congregation. We can be grateful for those who have served God and God’s people in this community throughout those many years! What a blessing these charter members have been to the life of this congregation! (Pictured from L to R are Bud Schuette, Helen Humphrey, Betty Samuelson, and Ruby & Don Hackman.) So, who are those people in your life? And, how is Jesus helping you to be a pioneer in this present day and age? This Thanksgiving, take the time to remember those who have gone before you and give thanks for their ministry! In Jesus you are becoming the cornerstone of the community! “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses… let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:1) 3 October 2006 The Crossroads Approximately 200 walkers were treated to a beautiful fall day for the Saint Paul CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 11. The walk began and ended at Cherokee Park United Church on Saint Paul’s west side, where dozens of volunteers assured a smooth event. So far approximately $15,000 has been raised to support the acclaimed hunger relief work of Church World Service. Thanks to all who walked and donated! PJohn CROP WALK WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!!! ________________________ MINNESOTA FOODSHARE Again this year for the month of November, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is offering to match funds for the Minnesota Food Share up to $800.00. Joerg was born and raised in Mainz, Germany. He moved to the US in 2002 and has lived in Chicago, the Carribean, and Minnesota (where he met Dana). He has worked in the Hotel Industry, and most recently does training and coaching with computers. Joerg is a runner who competed in Grandma’s marathon this summer, and most recently the Bank of America marathon in Chicago. Whether you set up tables, made coffee, set up food in the kitchen, served the many families or helped cleaned up afterwards. Every one of you have been so appreciated. You made my task of coordinating for the families smoother. When the fellowship team turned into hospitality team, the funeral teams and coordinator positions were created. Our hope was to create a strong ongoing team. Changes happen with an economy changing and so I am stepping down as Hospitality/Funeral Coordinator. Thank you for all your generous assistance. We are one family serving another family a meal when you just can’t do it all. Sometimes life just gets crazy and you just need a break. We can help alleviate a bit of the stress by providing a nice meal to help out. Just contact Kristi Schaut 651/777-5167 firstname.lastname@example.org or Char Stene and 612/751-8368 email@example.com and we will hook you up. You can also contact the church and they will get a hold of us. We are also looking for people to volunteer to be on our call list. If you think that you can help out once or twice a year providing a meal for a family let us know and we will add you to our call list. We rotate our calls so that we don’t use the same volunteers every time. We know that each person has better times then other to help so if you can only help out in the summer, that is fine, we will make a note of it.
