Economic Downturn hits
Mainstreet Madness
It is with regret the Hillsboro Chamber announces the cancellation of the 2009 Mainstreet Madness 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Due
to the economic circumstances surrounding many of the key partners and sponsors, the Hillsboro Chamber Board of Directors determined
the 2009 tournament would not be a viable event for the chamber to produce this year. “I am very sad to see the economy impact the work the
chamber does for the community. This tournament is a tradition among many avid basketball players,” says Denzil Scheller, chair of the chamber
board. “We hope everyone will understand and look for our return.”
One vital partnership Mainstreet Madness depended on was Joe’s Sports, Outdoor & More. As a sponsor, Joe’s provided 12 basketball
hoops for the weekend. However, with their announcement of bankruptcy and eventually liquidation, Joe’s is no longer able to supply hoops.
Tournament Director Iris Smith said, “We were definitely not anticipating the loss of Joe’s. They have been true supporters of the tournament.
They will be missed.” Along with Joe’s, other key companies had to decrease their sponsorships, making Mainstreet Madness fiscally irresponsible
for the chamber to move forward with this year.
We know many in the community will be surprised by this announcement. Mainstreet Madness has developed strong ties with players,
volunteers, referees, the City of Hillsboro, the downtown businesses, sponsors and so many more. “Canceling the event was not our first
choice,” says chamber President Deanna Palm. “We researched and considered many other options, with none of them transpiring.” She said
the chamber came to the decision after wrestling with many different variables, but ultimately deciding not to produce the event this year. Palm
says this break allows the chamber the opportunity to refocus and hopes to grow other events and programs.
Celebrate Hillsboro, the free family-friendly event produced by the City of Hillsboro, will continue its tradition this August full of live
entertainment, environmental stations, arts & crafts, kids’ activities, food booths, and so much more. Celebrate Hillsboro is now in its fourth year.
The Hillsboro Chamber would like to thank all of you involved with Mainstreet Madness over the past six years. Your participation and support is greatly
appreciated. We hope you maintain your support of the many fantastic events and programs the chamber produces throughout the year. If you have any
questions or comments, please contact Iris Smith at 503.726.2145 or iriss@hillchamber.org. w
