Celebrate Canada’s 142nd birthday by stepping back in time at “Historic Dominion Day” at Lang Pioneer Village on Wednesday, July 1st from 10 am to 4 pm. It will be a day for flag waving, stirring speeches and hoorays for “our boys” as our valiant 19th Century militia prepares to face the dreaded Fenian invaders. The village will be all decked out for the festivities. Many of Canada’s historic flags will be on display. Gather round as the British North America Act is proclaimed to the strains of “God Save the Queen” and “O’Canada”. Hear a speech and have your picture taken with our first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald. Learn who the Fenians were and how their 1866 invasion of Canada helped influence Confederation. Make your own “Union Jack” flag in the School House and enjoy a piece of birthday cake. The 49th of Foot Regiment will be performing musketry demonstrations while Fenians, in authentic costumes, will be making their first live appearance at Lang. The Millbrook Legion Branch 402’s rare Fenian Raids campaign medal and an original, July 1st 1867, copy of the Globe newspaper proclaiming confederation will be on display. Take part in Games on the Green with Sack Races, Three Legged Races, Egg & Spoon Races, Croquet and a Water Balloon Toss. Throughout the afternoon, listen to traditional music by the Old Time Fiddlers & Dancers. Take part in hands-on demonstrations like spinning, rug hooking, embroidery, quilting and candle making. The Keene Hotel will be serving ice cold lemonade, ginger beer, empire cookies and “Strawberry Fool”, Lang’s unique contribution to Peterborough & The Kawarthas “Berry Delicious” celebration. The Lang Grist Mill will be in full operation and bags of freshly ground whole wheat flour will be available for purchase. Be sure to visit the Peterborough Photographic Society’s exhibit “Portraits of Lang Pioneer Village”, in the MacKelvie Gallery. Regular Admission applies for this event: Adults ($8), Students and Seniors ($7), Youth (5-14) $4, Family ($20) includes 2 adults and 4 youth, under 5 free. All taxes included.
