Health Walks and Other Activities What is a ‘health walk’ and is it for me? A health walk is a short, locally held walk, where you are encouraged to walk at your own pace but if possible, slightly faster than a normal stroll. The aim of the health walks is to encourage and support people who are trying to increase their activity levels and lead a healthier lifestyle. Have you been told by your doctor that you need to do more exercise? Perhaps you have been looking for a way to become more active but are unsure where to start? Or maybe you already know how enjoyable and beneficial walking can be for you but would like a friendly group of people to walk with? If so, our scheme is for you! Trained volunteers lead our walks, with leaders at the front and back of the group. All of the health walks are free and you do not have to book a place. Our leaders are very friendly and will support all walkers whether you are just starting out or whether you have been walking regularly for a while, they are there to help you get the most out of your walks. Registration All of our health walks are free and you do not have to book a place (unless otherwise stated), however, we do ask everybody who takes part in our walks to complete a very simple health questionnaire and registration form before their first walk. Please arrive 15 minutes early on your first walk to register or request the forms in advance by contacting the Coordinator on: 01553 778673 Do I need to walk a lot already? No, you don’t have to walk a lot already. We have 3 different levels of walks; simply choose the level of walk most appropriate for your current ability. Level 1 – Beginner / Introductory – If you are new to being active and looking for a gentle walk to begin with, these walks are for you. They are no longer than 1 to 1.5 miles (some can be less than 1 mile) They are generally flat or with gentle slopes, and are mainly on firm surfaces. Level 2 – Improver – If you already do some activity but are looking for walks that are a bit longer to help build up your activity levels, these walks are for you. They are generally between 1.5 and 2.5 miles long and may include some steeper slopes and steps. They may also include some soft grassy, uneven surfaces. Level 3 – Advanced – These are our highest level walks for people who are confident about walking shorter distances and are looking for a longer, more challenging walk. They are generally between 2.5 to 4 miles long and may include longer steeper slopes, steps, and grassy uneven surfaces. You should only join level 3 walks when you can comfortably complete level 2 walks.
