Why Should I Become a Member— What’s In It for Me?
If you are asking that question, I’d like to suggest that your focus might not be where it should be. What happens when my focus is on myself? Well, if I’m focusing on me, I’m not focusing on God. God created me to bring glory to Him. When I’m focused on myself: pleasures are fleeting, life is meaningless, and joy never lasts. Instead of asking “What’s in it for me,” try asking “Will this glorify God?” When my focus is on Him it’s a whole new story . . . or a whole new song! Look at Who the focus is on in these Psalms—and the psalmist’s joyful attitude:  “But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.” Ps. 5:11 “You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” Ps. 16:11

ATTENTION PARENTS OF INFANTS AND TODDLERS
By Darcy Esworthy Parents of Infants and Toddlers…if you use the Nursery during the 10:00 and/or 11:30 worship services please be advised! Because of the nitrate levels in the drinking water at CLS, we will no longer provide water for the children as we have been in the past. Please bring beverages/water from your home for your children as they do get thirsty. Also, for our regular attendees who use the Nursery and childcare services, please consider helping at least once per each 3-month rotation! Playing with and loving the children is more rewarding than you’ll ever know! All you need to do is train with Pastor Steve Hreha and notify him or Darcy Esworthy so we can put you on the schedule. Thanks for considering this awesome ministry. May God bless you all! For more information, contact Darcy at 410-775-2340, 410-236-1829, or desworth@aol.com.

5. A good rule of thumb for determining if something is right is this – would it be good if everybody else did as I was doing? What if everyone dumped Sunday morning for a season in order to play sports? I guess churches could shut down for a time. I hear that they do that in certain places in Europe during the holiday or vacation season. But what does that say to the watching world? We go to church when it works for us, but when other things conflict with it, we shut down.

8. “But we made a commitment to the coach and the team. We can’t back out on that. Isn’t it important that we teach our kids to keep their commitments?” Let me suggest to you that you made a prior commitment to God. Your commitment is to His Word and it trumps any and all subsequent commitments. Do you place your commitment to man over your commitment to God? Will you keep your commitment to man even if it forces you to break your commitment to God? This is skewed and reversed thinking. Rather, you must say to man, “I will keep my commitment to you as long as it does not conflict with my commitment to God. If I am forced to choose between obeying you and obeying God, I side with God.” 9. “But the team needs my child. They are a key player. The team will lose if they don’t play.” Do you want to see how much the team and coach values your child? Choose God first. If your child is so valued, you will see that reflected in their effort to change the games from Sunday. But, either way, there is One who values you more and it is God. He does not need you nor does He hang His head in dismay when you don’t give Him the worship that He is due. God’s plans do not hinge on your involvement. He will be worshipped and His plans will be done, with or without you. He invites you to come and participate because of His grace and His love for you. Only God has the absolute pure motivation of wanting you on His team for what He can do for you.

10. “You don’t understand the sports world out there. If my child doesn’t stay on these teams and in these leagues that play on Aug / Sept 09 Sunday, she won’t be competitive with them, won’t be able to play on the high school team, and won’t get a scholarship some day.” Tell that one to Daniel and his Hebrew friends. They did not eat the king’s meat, thereby obeying God instead, and they fared far better than their competitors. Where does your faith lie? Is God able to provide your daughter with a platform to display the reason why He made her? If she is meant to play sports for His glory before a watching world, God will make sure she gets that opportunity. Her future isn’t in the world’s hands. It’s in His. 11. If Christians made the decision to refuse to play sports on Sunday or at least to refuse to play sports if it meant they would be taken out of church regularly for a season, the world would be forced to change its policy regarding Sunday sports. Christians complain that they “have” to play on Sunday. What do we expect from the world? Do we expect them to adopt our convictions? Why should they do this when they don’t know God and when they see that our convictions obviously don’t run very deep if we break our convictions so easily when others require that we do so. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit “restrains” the evil of this world through the church. Where is the restraint in this area of sports? We have caved into the world’s system and we are refusing to take a stand and demand that they change. Believe me when I say this – if today, tens of millions of Christians took a stand and refused to miss church for sports, it would cripple the sports’ god of America. It might not take it down but it would do great damage to Satan’s agenda.

The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. Ps. 19:8

By Kyle Nosal Front Porch is back outside. We are rocking a summer series at the Westminster Duck Pond near the MD140/97n exit Tuesdays at 7pm. We just finished up The Truth Project where we were able to "gaze upon the face of God." Now we will look at the heart of God and what His love means for us and our relationships. The greatest showing of His love is described in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." Come on Tuesdays as we discuss how we can emulate that love in our own lives. Front Porch is open to all young adults. If you have any questions or need directions, email or call Kyle at knosal@gmail.com or 240-566-2735.

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.Ps. 28:7

6. I have seen over the years that what parents do in moderation, children will do in excess. Make the decision now to take your kids out of church for sports, and you will see them forsake church altogether when they are at college. When you chastise them for this behavior and they tell you that they need to study or they are tired, what will you say to them? “Go to church, Johnny, God is first.” “Oh yeah, mom and dad, like we put God first during volleyball season?” You will have no leg to stand on. 7. Would you make the decision to yank your child from school for 3 months for sports? “No,” you say. Why is that? “Well, the law wouldn’t allow it?” Okay, what if the law were changed? I imagine you would not do it because you value the importance of your child’s education. Do you value your child’s spiritual relationship with God any less?

There are actually many benefits to being a member—but if that is the reason you are thinking of membership might I suggest that this might not be the time to pursue membership. If you desire to live your life for God’s glory then I encourage you to check out our Discovering Membership book, sign up for our next class Sept. 13 and 20 at 10 a.m., and start walking the path of life for the glory of God, with joy in your heart!

Creation Fest - “It is what it is!”
“It is what it is!” We heard those words many times during the course of our week at Creation. The first time was when we arrived with 30 people to a campsite that looked like it could accommodate ½ that number, with deep mud ruts throughout our site! After trying to figure out what to do Kevin Roberson said “It is what it is. Let’s do whatever we need to do to make it work.” We had so much fun stomping down the mud ruts (looked like an old I Love Lucy show) and worked long and hard to set up tents. No matter what happened throughout the rest of the week, everyone did whatever was necessary, never complained, and imaged our God well! We had what appeared to be an underground spring in the middle of our food tent, we had a tent that had to be relocated, we had the skies open up during worship, and did I mention mud. . . lots of mud . . . and our people continued to praise God through it all. When God’s people worship Him, no matter the circumstances, I believe He is very pleased. It was what it was! What was it, you ask? It was a glorious week of worshiping our Creator God!! Thanks to everyone who went this year—and especially the kids! There are some jobs (not too many) that the kids just can’t do. But whatever they could do, they did. And not only did they do whatever they could but they did it with a cheerful attitude! What a blessing they were to all of us! I can’t promise too much for next year except that I know that our God will be there and He WILL be worshipped! Wanna join us? We’d love to have you!

Meet UBC’s Newest Missionaries
Scott and Margie Brown Chosen People Ministries’ staff members, Scott and Margie Brown, are hosting weekly “sausage sizzlers” in New Zealand, a place where many Israelis travel after their army service. The first sizzler drew backpackers from at least seven nations, many of whom attended a “backpacker worship service” across the street, where they heard excellent music and compelling testimonies and received a Backpacker Bible, peppered with accounts from other international travelers whose journeys led them to an encounter with the Holy One of Israel. Sherrie Dodson Of all the nations in the world, the Lord has put one in my view, the Tohono O’odham nation in southwest Arizona. Walking across the Tohono O’odham reservation at the end of a full day with a World Gospel Mission work team, I remember so clearly thinking, “I’m having the time of my life.” It’s been over 8 years since this trip. I never anticipated I’d go back. My home church has a mission’s conference during the last weekend of February each year. During the conference in 2007, while listening to a missionary couple share about their work, I was challenged in hearing about the poverty of people and that other places in the world don’t

have the same resources and workers as we do here. We were challenged to offer what we have to the Lord, the abilities and gifts He has given us. I prayed, “Lord, if you can use a 14-year old degree in Social Work, it’s Yours.” In holding all of it before the Lord in prayer and seeking Him over about a month’s time, in kneeling by my bed one night, I knew the Lord had opened the door open so wide from my home in New Midway, MD straight to the Tohono O’odham reservation with a “Sherrie, this is the way, walk ye in it.” For updates of all of UBC’s Missionaries on the Missions’ blog, go to http://missions.utown.org

2010 UBC Missions’ Trips Your Missions’ Team is praying and talking with our missionaries about possible missions’ trips for 2010. We are going to be loading up the Missions’ Blog with all kinds of information to help you decide whether 2010 is the year for you! If you came to hear Scott Brown from New Zealand, you know what a sausage sizzler is. The Carrera family shared life and ministry in Brazil. Doug Blacksten has a new position with Wycliffe—National Comprehensive Plan Developer/Manager for Ethiopia. What is that, you ask? Find out at the home of Glenn and Vicki Edwards (3358 Lowman Lane, Union Bridge), Saturday, August 8. David Armstrong has seven reasons why you should never go on a Short-Term Missions’ Trip. Find David’s reasons on the Missions’ Blog at http://missions.utown.org Adopt a UBC Missionary What does that mean? Find each of our missionaries on the blog or on a brochure on the back table on Sunday morning. Read about them, their families, their ministry, and the location where they serve. Then you decide who you have a connection with. Maybe the

missionary shares your ministry interest, or has young children your kids could get to know, or maybe they serve here in the United States or abroad. Then you should contact them. Send them snail mail and email, introduce yourself and your family, and as the relationship grows you might want to send them a care package. Every missionary has needs, even here in the States. Then when the missionary you have been corresponding with comes to the States on home assignment, make a plan to get together. Host the missionary family. Then, who knows, maybe one day you will be heading to visit them where they serve. If you are interested in adopting a missionary, contact Jay Bubel. The Missions’ Team will help you get started. Local Missions The UB Drop-In went to Appalachia in June. The job was to help an elderly lady paint her house. The team experienced a different culture, met Pastors Rose and Steve, sister Sharon Rose, and toured the local area while Pastor Rose shared about life in Appalachia. Building at Watson Lane
By Christine Phillips, Facilities Team Leader The Facilities Team blog has a new look! Have you seen it? It is now called “UBC Builds” and will be more focused on the construction process. I will be providing updates about our meetings, decisions that are being made, and our prayers as we go through this process. I encourage you to go to http://facility.utown.org to learn more about where we are now and where we are going! We met with Lehman Construction on July 1 and asked them for two bids. One is for putting up the steel building (shell only, no interior walls) and another is to finish out the building and complete the project. It will take them some time to put the bids together and we are not expecting to see them until the first of August. Lehman said they could start putting up the steel building as early as the middle of August. By the time you read this, Stambaugh’s should have the base paving down on the road. This will help stabilize the road for construction traffic and for anyone to drive up on the hill and admire the view! On our blog you will see a link called “Floor Plan”. This is a PDF of the floor plan for the new church. I encourage you to print it out and bring it with you. The corners of the building are staked out. You can almost picture where the building is going to go. If you have any questions about the building of the new church, you can email the Facilities Team at facilityblog@utown.org.

Aug / Sept 09

The heart of everything we do is to provide an opportunity for people to worship Jesus and to be transformed to become like Him.
Tim Webster
My home church gave me my first opportunity to preach in the pulpit when I was 13 years old. I’ll never forget that day. I preached on the Good Shepherd. I still have the handwritten notes for that sermon. What kind of church gives a teenager the pulpit? The answer is – a church that wants to support God’s call on a young man to preach the gospel. Here I am now 33 years later and I’m still preaching His Word. I thank God that He placed me in a church where the leaders had a vision and passion to support God’s call on my life. At Uniontown, we want to give the same kind of support to the men whom God may be calling among us to enter into the pastoral ministry. On August 2, three such men will be preaching. There names are Zach Ritz, Bill Brown, and Trevor Felkner. Not many days after he preaches, Zach will be heading off to Moody Bible Institute with his bride Carie to train for the ministry. Bill is training currently at Capitol Bible Seminary with a Counseling and Discipleship major. Trevor is finishing up his Associate’s Degree and is pursuing full-time ministry with Young Life. Come and be a part of this wonderful day as we invest in men whom God is calling into the ministry and as we hear from them what He has to teach us. Pete will be finishing up Colossians this August and will be joining me in preaching through the Book of Luke. We hope that by us preaching through the same book, we will be able to provide greater continuity in the pulpit on Sunday mornings. Pete and I are sharing the pulpit for two reasons: (1) God has called and gifted both of us to preach His Word at Uniontown; (2) By co-preaching, we demonstrate that the pulpit is not about the man standing behind it, but about the God who presents Himself to us through His Word. Pray for us that we hear from Him and proclaim Him faithfully each week. sports ahead of Him in my priority list, I have made it my god. 2. The Bible says, “Thou shalt keep the Sabbath holy.” One day a week we should rest and not work or by interpretation, do anything unnecessary on that day. We live in a fast-paced world. Our bodies need rest. God also demands that we give Him the first fruits of our money and our time. We need to give God at least one day of our week if we ever hope to honor Him the other six. 3. The Bible tells us to live our lives in a way that we are clearly separated from the world and in a way that our testimony would show them we are different because we are children of the King. This ought to affect the way we play sports too. We should not conform to the world but we should be transformed by God.

Executive pastor news
By Dave Dent
I’m sure the financial slides come-and-go so quickly on Sunday mornings, that you probably forget just how things look by the time you reach your car in the parking lot. I wanted to take this month’s newsletter slot to share a few financial details on the slide we showed you at our last Sunday morning update time on the building project. The chart below compares what our estimated mortgage of $20,000 a month compares with the actual giving that was collected and applied directly to the building fund. The estimated mortgage amount of $20,000 a month is what our leadership believes is a target of affordability. The giving amounts on this chart reflect what has been directly designated to the building fund. is very close. After applying the remaining cash in the ‘building fund’ ($481,155) to this next phase to that balance, we would still need $179,951. Based on what our ‘typical’ giving has been to our building fund and the designated portion of the current expense fund for future mortgage each week of $4,000, we could apply those funds over the course of this next phase (6 months or 24 weeks) to the balance and take off another $96,000. This leaves a balance of $83,951. What we communicated to you when we presented this chart was the need to make up that balance. How is God going to do that? Well, praise the Lord, the following Sunday, the building fund giving (in just 1 Sunday) was over $52,000. He will do it, we believe. One other point to mention relating to this chart is the last item. Over the years our leadership has realized that it’s good stewardship to maintain a surplus. This amount ($269,316) reflects the amount that the church (you) have built up over the years. God has been amazing, through you, over the years. Our leadership realizes that this ‘surplus’ is a separate fund, but it is a possibility for use in the event the need is there. We are trusting God that we will not have to use this surplus money for the building and that we can keep it as part of strategy to be fiscally responsible. So….has this helped clear up things? We hope so. Serving 40+ people the 4th Saturday of every month from 1-3 p.m. at the UBUMC We need YOU, your family, small group or ministry team to serve with us! We thank you for your generous food donations which keep this pantry going!

Option #1: Marty Whitfield & Shirley Schrier. Starting up again in September, every Wed. at 10 a.m. at Shirley Schrier’s home, we will begin with a short study of Joshua using materials we had from Joy of Living (end of last year’s study). It is a great time to join and see if you like the format of the study. Last year we ended our study of Exodus with a trip to the Tabernacle in Lancaster; it was great to visualize what we had studied. Once we finish Joshua (4-6 weeks) we will continue our study in the Old Testament with new study guides from Joy of Living. Call either Marty Whitfield (410-848-0481) or Shirley Schrier (410-635-3415) for details. Option #2, 3 & 4: The Truth Project. We have three groups that will be working through this excellent study put out by Focus on the Family. The primary goal of The Truth Project is that “individuals will be transformed into the likeness of Christ by gazing on the face of God.” Prayerfully, individuals who participate in this study will begin to develop and live out a biblical worldview. The three ladies groups currently doing this study are: (1) Denise Velte (410-775-1345) meeting e/o Friday, 122p.m. Study began July 31st (still open to new members; (2) Robin Hoff (410-848-4720) and Missy Gallagher (410-848-4650) , meeting 2nd and 4th Thurs., 7 p.m., begins Sept. 10; (3) Jodi Sell (410-848-0853) meeting 1st & 3rd Thurs., 9-11 p.m., begins in September. The detail amounts on this chart are not so clear. Over the course of the last 12 months, your offerings have exceeded the estimated mortgage 8 out of 12 months. This obviously doesn’t mean that the mortgage wouldn’t have been paid for 4 months, since the totals for the whole year in comparison are over $55,000. What that means is that the months your offerings exceeded the estimated mortgage, those amounts were in such excess to cover the month’s that were below the line and there was still a surplus of $55,000. Confused yet? I hope not, but please give me a call if you have any questions on this or other items related to this amazing project! The next chart was used last month to convey what the next ‘phase’ of the building project costs are and what the needs are. The total amount for paving the road and constructing the shell of the building is $661,106. We are still awaiting confirmation from Lehman (our General Contractor) on the exact cost to ‘Erect steel building’, but we feel confident the estimate above

12. Speaking of Satan’s agenda, who do we really believe is behind this fairly recent movement of making sports a priority over God on Sundays? The Bible is clear that whoever or whatever is not “for Him” is “against Him.” There is no middle ground. Do we think putting sports first is God’s agenda or do we imagine the enemy is behind it? I can assure that God has no hand in taking His people from worship so they can put a ball into a net.

personally wonder if there aren’t so many injuries these days simply because our children are playing too much. But, all that notwithstanding, let me say this – whatever you hope to offer you children by taking them out of church to play a game, I believe I am offering an infinite amount more by keeping them out of the game for church. Each Sunday, faithful leaders give my children truth from the Bible about the God of the universe, truth that will help them understand who they are in Christ and how to face the enemy’s temptations when they come – and believe me they are coming. When my children face the enemy knocking on their door, they will have years of my training at home and years of the church’s training on Sundays, that’s the opportunity I am affording them. What does the ball field offer them that will top that? 14. Perhaps, this little sermonette has not moved you in the least. Maybe you chalk this up to a preacher talking. After all, what else would you expect me to say? Certainly, you would not imagine I would say, “Go ahead and stay home from church. It’s all good.” It could be that you think I’m a bit fanatical over attending church. Let me suggest to you that I would far rather have the reputation of being fanatical over my worship than being obsessed by my children being in sports. But, in the end, it really doesn’t matter much what I think or what you think. The truth is both you and I will someday have to stand before God. I have my speech ready, “Lord, I said ‘no’ to my children being in sports on Sunday because I wanted to teach them to put you first in their lives.” Let me ask you a question, “What will your speech

be when you explain why sports took you from His house?” 15. You and your children were created for the purpose of imaging God and giving Him glory. Do you believe you are imaging Him well by playing sports when you should be in church? What does that say of God? It says that He comes to His House each week to meet with His people but He doesn’t really mind if His people decide not to show up when something more exciting comes along. I believe God is far more zealous for His House of Worship than that. It matters to Him that you come to worship Him. You need to demonstrate to the world that God desires to meet with His people each week and that His people desire to give Him the worship that He is due. If you stay home or on the ball field, you are either saying that God doesn’t want to meet His people or that His people don’t want to meet Him. Either way, it’s a poor testimony for both God and the church, with the former of these being the most serious sin. I want to image well the God I serve and I do that by coming to His house over all other priorities because I know He is there and wants me to be there too.

13. I guess I’m a little confused about what we are trying to accomplish by all this sports’ involvement. When I ask parents this, they tell me of the wonderful opportunity that they are giving their child. This team is special. This is travel or club or AU or some other elite once in a lifetime opportunity. I’ll tell you that I didn’t start playing organized sports until I was 13. There simply was no opportunity like that on the island where I grew up. I never played travel. There was no travel. Most seasons of my sports career in high school and college were short seasons.
For instance, I played 104 games in college and missed only one game in the four years I played basketball. I don’t look back and think I missed out. Quite the contrary, when I play now, I can barely walk – probably

In Everything Give Thanks
By Dottie Fritz We thank you God for this great land From shore to shore and sifting sand, For fields of grain and skies of blue, Freedom to worship Your Word so true. We thank You for heroes so brave, Serving their country, our land to save. For tender mercies You send our way, Be thankful with praises we repay. The change of season, that we behold, With gold and scarlet leaves, their beauty untold. The glistening snow on tall pine trees, Dewdrops on roses and warm summer breezes. We thank You God for Your love and care, In each long night our trials to share. Let us count our blessings and with grateful heart, Seeking His will, His love to impart.

His Care For You
By Dottie Fritz Put your hand in His hand And He will see you through. He will love and care for you. A constant friend, so kind and true. As tender Shepherd, He leads us Beside the waters, cool and clear. So rest in His love divine And you will know His peace so dear. He will clear the stony way And smooth the pathway too. Remember His promise, dear friend, “I will ever care for you.” Gems
