Solar roofing generates heat without the panels
Dorset based company Solex Energy has launched its Solex roofing products, a complete package of solar water heating system that combines functionality with aesthetics, without using any over-roof panels. Solex roofing patented range includes solar tiles, slates and cladding and promises to turn a building’s roof into a thermal energy generator, providing the end-user with a source of free heating and large CO2 savings. The solar heated water produced can then be used for hot water, under floor heating and swimming pool heating, as well as for commercial and industrial applications, without compromising on the building aesthetics. The result attained is a clean line roof appearance with a touch of sophistication that has been welcomed by the planning authorities. Solex roofing offers very efficient water heating systems, supplying hot water throughout most of the year, with domestic applications (6-8m2) saving up to 70% of annual heating costs. Solex roofing has been designed with the environment in mind. It replaces the conventional roof materials with the advantage of improving the roof insulation. The materials used are extremely durable and are compatible with the traditional natural and manufactured roofing, blending nicely with the surroundings. They can be cut if necessary to fit across the whole roof. This system offers low m2 cost compared with solar hot water panels and tubes. The installation is simple and quick. Solex Energy has been operating since 2001 and has carried out various projects around Europe. Notes for the editor:
     Solar Slates are made of toughened glass, and are laid in the same double lap manner as traditional slates. They can be installed as a patch within natural slates of across the whole roof. Nu-lok Solar Slates are single glass lap slates, which use a unique metal battening system, ideal where the remainder of the roof also uses the Nu-lok system. Solar Tiles are polycarbonate single lap tiles, ideal for fitting into an existing concrete tiled roof. Solar cladding is a lightweight solar system for use over existing profile metal roofing, ideal for commercial and industrial applications. Operation: The sun shines through the transparent roof covering onto a black silicone rubber solar absorber strip, which becomes hot. Water is circulated through the absorber strip by a pump, and transfers the absorbed heat to where it is required. The transparent roofing prevents heat loss from the absorber strip to the air, and a rear insulating layer prevents heat loss into the roof structure.
