             and Nuclear Engineering
                                       Resume
This is in Institute VIN^A traditional research field, very wide and closely connected
with engineering application. Research in this field is mainly realized in one laboratory
and two centers: Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy, Center for Nuclear
Technologies and Research, Center for I. C. Engines and Motor Vehicles.

                         Energy and Thermal Sciences
Investigations in the field of energy and thermal sciences are the stable combination of
fundamental research and applications, with the special emphasis on mathematical mod-
eling. Large number of scientific and conference papers, lot of them in international
journals and conferences can be classified in the following topics: application of the low
temperature plasma, precesses and exploitation problems of the large pulverized coal
combustion boilers, fluidized bed boilers, energy efficiency high temperature turbulent
flows with chemical reactions and mathematical modeling, using both commercial CFD
packages and originally developed models.
Based on the fundamental research of the plasma-particles interactions, presently re-
search is oriented to the use of plasma torch for start-up and flame support of the utility
size pulverized coal combustion boilers. The whole range of scientific and engineering
tools, including CFD modeling, are used to develop, construct and put in operation pilot
facility for start-up of the 200MWe utility boiler. Results are presented in the number of
scientific papers and technical reports.
Exploitation problems of the large, pulverized coal combustion boilers are the start-up
for a number of fundamental and applied research: radiation emissivity of the deposits,
NOx emission, corrosion problems and ash deposit on heat transfer surfaces are studied,
monitoring of the flame position and ash deposit layer thickness are the most provoking
topics in this field. Diagnostic of furnace and boiler parameters, both development of
specific measurement methods and field measurements are characteristics of the activity
in last year. Three dimensional mathematical model describing all processes in the fur-
nace of the pulverized coal combustion boilers is developed, as a tool for operation anal-
ysis and optimization of parameters.
Long term research activity in the field of fluidized bed combustion is devoted this year
on the biomass devolatilization and combustion and self-sulfur retention by coal ash.
Applied research and engineernig activites are oriented to the development of specific
concepts of the FBC biolers for local coals and biomass.
High temperature flows research is closely connected with the processes in plasma reac-
tors and plasma torch, in pulverized coal combustion boilers and in different equipment
in thermal, chemical and process engineering. Original mathematical models for
gas-particle flows, coal particle combustion, heat transfer, NOx conversion and other
processes are developed and applied in prediction of plasma flows, pulverized coal com-
bustion burners. Special achievement is threedimensional model of the complex pro-
cesses in the furnaces of the pulverized coal combustion boilers.
Active participation in the formulation of the Energy strategy in Serbia up to the 2010,
makes a frame for the research activity in the field of energy and thermal sciences, with
special attrention to the energy efficiency and renewable energy resources.

                                                        Nuclear Engineering
         In order to improve the present conditions, related to the nuclear and radiation safety,
         a program for the nuclear decommissioning in the Vin~a Institute, planned to be done
         in the next 10 years is prepared. Three dimensional methodologies and mathematical
         models are developed for the radiological characterization of spent nuclear fuel and
         reactor RA, and for the determination of the distribution of the activity of radio-ele-
         ments contained in radioactive waste packages by means of single photon emission
         computed tomography.
         Research development is basically oriented to the new frontiers of nuclear technology,
         since ten leading nuclear countries, key to the future of nuclear power, have now se-
         lected six technologies that they believe represent the future shape of nuclear energy
         and are now in the process of partnering to bring these technologies to reality. Based
         on the our development of three dimensional methodologies for the fuel burnup anal-
         ysis, our Institute actively participates in this process providing reference calculation
         results for two of six next generation technologies for future bilateral and multilateral
         co-operation.
         Fundamental and applied research are also oriented to the development of methods
         for neutronic design of an accelerator driven sub-critical system using Monte Carlo
         techniques and reactor noise analysis, and for nuclear criticality analysis of compli-
         cated reactor RB configurations and transport cask with reactor RA fresh fuel ele-
         ments.

                                           I. C. Engines and Motor Vehicles
The area of scientific research:
     – The application of theoretical and experimental methods for motor vehicle noise
        source identification and analysis;
     – The development and application of pertinent methods for motor vehicle noise re-
        duction;
     – The application of computational fluid dynamics for modeling of various in-cylin-
        der processes such as: 3D numerical modeling of nonreactive flows in arbitrary ge-
        ometry, 3D numerical modeling of flame proposition in cylinder abunded by
        moving piston and valves, numerical optimization of muffler geometry, and 3D nu-
        merical modeling of car aerodynamics.
     – Vibrational and acoustic comfort of bus passenger;
     – Investigation of motor vehicles steered wheels shimmy;
     – Reliability Design of Mechanical systems.
Vehicle Design:
     – 12m low floor city bus.
Vehicle tests:
     – Pursuant to various national and international regulations (ECE/eec);
     – Type approval tests;
     – Redesigned vehicles tests;
     – Reliability and quality investigations;
     – Check and adjustment of test devices applied for periodical vehicle technical exami-
        nations.

                     SPECTROSCOPIC INVESTIGATION ON INFRARED RADIATION
                    CHARACTERISTICS OF PULVERIZED COAL ASH DEPOSITS FOR
                             THERMAL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS

This paper deals with thermal radiation characteristics of ash deposits on a pulverized coal combustion
boiler of an electric power plant. Normal emittance spectra in the 2.5~25 mm wavelength region and total
normal emittance are measured on four kinds of ash layers of a mm order thickness and at 600~1100 K in
heating and cooling processes. It is found that the ash powder layers are opaque for the infrared radiation.
The spectral emittance increases with an increase of wavelength of radiation and temperature of the ashes.
The emittance spectrum does not depend sensitively on chemical composition of the ashes. The total emit-
tance decreases with an increase of temperature. The ash powder layer is sintered and fused at tempera-
tures higher than 1000 K, and the emittance of the sintered layer is higher than that of the layer before the
sintering. In a kind of ash layer, semi-transparency appears with the sintering. The above results are sum-
marized from a thermal engineering point of view to suggest a quantitative direction for evaluating thermal
radiation characteristics in a safety design of boiler furnaces.

            INFLUENCE OF NON-UNIFORMITY OF COAL AND DISTRIBUTION OF
        ACTIVE CALCIUM ON SULFUR SELF-RETENTION BY ASH - A CASE STUDY OF
                               KOLUBARA LIGNITE

Self-retention of SO2 by ash of different grades of Kolubara lignite was experimentally investigated in a lab-
oratory furnace. The peculiarity of this type of coal is that in the open pit there are distinct layers of coal and
ballast matter, which complicates the formation of representative samples. Two grades of this coal (differ-
ing in ballast matter content) were investigated using 3 sieved fractions: 1-1.6 mm, 2.5-3.15 mm and 4.76-7
mm. It was found that particle size had no significant effect on the sulfur self-retention efficiency (hSO2).
The effect of ballast matter content on hSO2 was investigated by classifying two sieved fractions into classes
with different density ranging from <1000 kg/m3 to >1600 kg/m3. It was found that most of sulfur self-reten-
tion occurs in less dense particles. For this coal only 60% of the total calcium was found to be active in rela-
tion to sulfur self-retention capability. Most of the active calcium and sulfur were found to be present in
particles of lower density, which explains their dominant contribution to overall sulfur self-retention.

    KERNEL-INTEGRATION SCATTER MODEL FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF NUCLEAR
                 WASTE DRUMS BY GAMMA EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY

The objective of this study is the determination of the distribution of the activity of radioelements contained
in radioactiwe waste packages by means of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). A
three- dimensional (3D) projector simulator for a parallel hole collimator and NaI(Tl) scintillator, based on
the point kernel integration method, is proposed. The model takes into account the attenuation and scatter
of gamma rays. Primary scattered photons are treated by the Compton process and Klein-Nishina formula,
and the multiple scattering is accounted for by means of the dose buildupa factor normally used in shielding
problems. An advantage of the proposed model is that it offers the possibility of generating a full two-di-
mensional point-spread function (PSF) that can be used for 3D reconstruction. The developed model is
convenient in those situations where more exact techniques (such as Monte Carlo simulation) are not eco-
nomical. The model has been evaluated for the package having homogenous density with the Cs-137 point
source inside.

                 SOME ASPECTS OF THE INVESTIGATION OF RANDOM VIBRATION
                              INFLUENCE ON RIDE COMFORT

Contemporary vehicles must satisfy high ride comfort criteria. This paper attempts to develop criteria for
ride comfort improvement. The highest loading levels have been found to be in the vertical direction and
the lowest in lateral direction in passenger cars and trucks. These resultshave formed the basis for further
laboratory and field investigations. An investigation of the human body behaviour under random vibrations
is reported in this paper. This research included two phases; biodynamic research and ride comfort investi-
gation. A group of 30 subjects was tested. The influence of broadband random vibrations on the human
body was examined through the seat-to-head transmissibility function (STHT). Initially, vertical and and
fore and aft vibrations were considered. Multi-directional vibration was also investigated. In the
biodynamic research, subjects wewre exposed to 0-55, 1-75 and 2-25 m/s2 r.m.s. vibration levels in the
0.5-40Hz frequency domain.
