teve Buchalter delivers more than just clean conference rooms to businesses. He also delivers peace of mind through strong management and hardworking, custom-trained employees. “People have come to realize if they hire us, they have a company they can count on,” Buchalter says. Five years after he founded Enterprise Cleaning Corporation, Buchalter now delivers his services — and relief — to 185 commercial clients throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island and northwestern Connecticut. His 120-employee company is moving up, earning a No. 5 position on the Worcester Business Journal’s recent list of Fastest-Growing Private Companies. Founded just five years ago, Enterprise now cleans a wide range of commercial venues, from Commerce Bank’s local offices to Heywood Hospital’s floors in Gardner to the Worcester Sharks’ locker rooms. He considers his company fortunate to be growing at a time when many other local companies are struggling, but says it’s the nature of the industry. “At the end of the day, everybody still needs a cleaning company,” Buchalter says. Enterprise has a management system for overseeing its cleaners that is unique within the cleaning industry. For example, when a new client signs on for nightly cleaning service, a manager will supervise the work and a customer service representative will also follow up with a phone call the next morning. This usually continues daily for a while, then moves to a weekly and monthly schedule — and there’s plenty of spot checks in between. Most small buildings are assigned an outside manager who comes in and makes the spot checks. Larger buildings are assigned their own in-house manager with whom commercial clients can easily communicate. “Having that level of management there basically makes their job easier,” Buchalter says. ENTERPRISE CLEAN!” slogan, the company’s success goes beyond its management system to how it trains its employees. Unlike many cleaning companies, training goes far beyond simply instructing employees to wear a uniform with a picture ID badge. Each employee is “custom” trained as part of a team to clean a particular site, Buchalter says. Employees who clean a manufacturing site require far different training than those who clean an office building, Buchalter says, but each office building also varies in its schedule and traffic flow. Buchalter says Enterprise does different and special things with its employees to retain the best ones and to get more from them than other companies in the industry. “All the different cleaning companies were sort of pulling from the same labor pool,” Buchalter says. “It’s what you do with that that makes you good or bad.” Enterprise Cleaning doesn’t stop with custom site training. Bucking the industry again, the company also pays most of its cleaners salaries rather than hourly rates. “We hold them responsible for the end result, which is making sure the business is clean,” Buchalter says. Salaries support the message that Enterprise Cleaning wants the employees to stay long and work hard. Many cleaners have worked their way up to become building managers with company cars and other benefits, Buchalter says. “We want to try to give our employees an incentive to work hard,” Buchalter says. “A lot of our employees have been here since the start of our company.” Enterprise also tries to celebrate its employees with Christmas bonuses and a regular summer party. “We’re able to grow at a time when other companies are maybe not growing so fast as we are and maybe a reason for that is we have a great staff of employees,” Buchalter says. “Without them, the company wouldn’t be where we are today.” Among the services Enterprise Cleaning offers are: • Nightly cleaning services

• Carpet cleaning and maintenance • Post-construction cleanup • Floor-stripping, refinishing and maintenance • Window washing • Day porter/matron services • Clean room services • 24-hour emergency services • Interior painting service for apartment complexes and office buildings ■
