Scabies is a highly contagious skin infection caused by an infestation of the scabies mite. Scabies infections cause severe, almost unbearable itching that tends to get worse at night. Those suffering from scabies seek immediate relief through any number of scabies treatments. Scabies treatment typically involves the application of a prescribed cream or lotion, which must be left on for eight hours, or overnight, and then washed off. The cream must be applied from the neck down. In some cases, the symptoms of scabies may worsen temporarily during treatment, before relief occurs. Oral medications may be available, although they may not be formally approved for use in treating scabies. Antihistamines may help with the severe itching caused by a scabies infection. Scabies treatment often involves not only treating the infected person, but all family members and other individuals who may have been exposed, because scabies can be spread so easily. Tea tree oil can be applied to the skin to alleviate itching and inflammation. Manuka extract is also said to both eliminate the infestation and provide symptom relief. Manuka is one natural remedy that offers several options for scabies treatment; it can be purchased as a soap, oil or cream, so patients can choose whatever they are most comfortable with. The oil, cream or soap should then be applied liberally to the affected area regularly and can often eliminate the infection within a week of treatment. Evening primrose oil is another natural remedy that may provide some relief of the itching caused by scabies. Evening primrose oil is frequently used to alleviate skin irritations such as eczema, so it can provide soothing relief of scabies symptoms as well. Turmeric has been used throughout history for treating skin problems, particularly itching, and has been proven effective against insects. This particular natural treatment for scabies could act against both the symptoms and the mite infestation itself.
