AEDC to develop “shovel-ready” megasite for Ascension Parish
Ascension aiming to develop first megasite along the Ms. River and in the Baton Rouge region

(Sorrento, October 5, 2006) The Ascension Economic Development Corporation (AEDC), through its private charitable foundation-the Ascension Economic Development Foundation (AEDF), has started the process of identifying a 750+ acre site within Ascension Parish for future large industrial projects. AEDF has signed a contract with Peake Consulting of Villa Hills, Kentucky, an economic development and site selection consulting firm whose principals have worked with private industry on major manufacturing projects over the last two decades and who have worked with communities, including Tangipahoa Parish, on developing a megasite. The AEDF project will be conducted by Margaret Grissom of Peake Consulting, LLC. “One of the top requirements for companies these days is timing. The ability to escalate the start-up of a project provides a tremendous advantage over competitors. Through this project, it is apparent that AEDC/AEDF knows the true meaning of “speed-to-market,” said Margaret Grissom of Peake Consulting LLC. The project will involve assessing large available sites within the Parish on the east and west banks of the Mississippi River, including review of the access of the site to infrastructure, zoning, non-attainment issues, and dock construction along the Mississippi River including geophysical and topographic assessments. The AEDF will also proceed in obtaining an option on the final chosen site from the owner to avoid a lengthy negotiation process that may eliminate Ascension Parish from contention for future projects and gauge community support for the site. “The idea of developing a ‘shovel ready’ or ‘certified’ site is giving those communities across the country a tremendous advantage over those communities which do not have a ready site. By developing a complete assessment and analysis on the site along with a potential option on the property, your community has a three to six month advantage over another competing parish in Louisiana or a competing county out of State for a project,” said Tommy Kurtz, President and CEO, of AEDC and AEDF. A final report will be issued in early 2007 and further work will be done on the final site or sites recommended by Peake Consulting, LLC followed by an environmental engineering study of the property and securing an option. If infrastructure is needed on the site, AEDC in coordination with the Parish and local utility companies will work over the next few years to bring needed infrastructure to the chosen site. The project will be funded from private sector contributions given to the AEDF but funding will also be provided by the Baton Rouge Area Chamber’s Special Opportunity Fund. "We are excited to be a substantial funding partner in the development of a megasite in Ascension Parish, “ said Baton Rouge Area Chamber President and CEO Stephen Moret, “The AEDC really is on a roll right now -- this project will help the AEDC position the parish to be competitive for a major economic development project in the next few years." AEDF is also pursuing matching grants from other economic development organizations in the Baton Rouge region. The shovel-ready site project is one of the many industry specific initiatives undertaken by the AEDF as part of the Foundation’s “Ascension Advantage” five-year economic development plan for Ascension Parish.
