Girls on the Run is a life-changing after school program for 3rd through 8th grade girls. The interactive curriculum combines self-esteem enhancing lessons with uplifting workouts designed to develop the whole girl: her physical, mental, emotional and social self. Young girls are empowered with a greater sense of self-awareness, a sense of achievement, and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, and self-confident women. Our mission is to use the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living. Our 12-week program uses interactive activities such as running, playing games and discussing important issues to teach specific life skills such as making healthy decisions, leadership, addressing bullying and gossip, and contributing to the community. Each session is led by trained female coaches who guide and mentor the girls through the curriculum and help them train together to run or walk in the WonderGirl 5K (3.1 mile) with their teammates and community members. Girls on the Run-Chicago is the largest independent council of Girls on the Run International. There are more than 120 councils across the U.S. and Canada serving more than 40,000 girls, and the WonderGirl race series is the second largest 5K race series in the nation. In the Chicago area, we: • Serve more than 3,000 girls in 3rd-8th grade at more than 120 sites in 5 counties: Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane and Will. • Reach girls in underserved communities. • Train and support more than 400 coaches, all women, who volunteer to mentor the girls in their after school sessions. • Host two WonderGirl 5K races for our program participants. These family events are also open to the public. More than 4,000 participate in the spring race; the fall race hosts approximately 2,000 runners.
