Thanks to Jeff Johannes for getting the exact personnel info. Charlie Hulme dug up an article from the December 18, 1971 Melody Maker entitled "The News From Al". According to this, he was backed on every track but one by members of the band Quiver. (Brinsley Schwarz play on the remaining track.) The same source indicates that Al had recorded a version of the tradition medieval piece "The Lyke Wake Dirge", which was obviously omitted at the last moment. (The most famous recording of this track is by the Pentangle: see, for example, their album "Early Classics" [Shanachie 79078].) Among the other tracks mentioned in the article is "Dance Of The Prunes"; Charlie speculates that this may have been a working title for "Once An Orange, Always An Orange". In the article (written by Andrew Means) discusses Al's transition to historical songs, and quotes Al as saying that "The Night Of The 4th Of May" '... looks like being the last [love song]. This album is the last of the old wine, really. It has to be because the affair is ended.' Notes: Most sources give 1973 as the date for PP&F, but the copyright date on the Arista CD is 1974. A question from Charlie Hulme: on "Past, Present And Future" and "Modern Times", Peter Wood is consistently referred to as Peter Woods. Did he change his name (or is it perhaps a different person)? As Matt notes, "The US has the all-familiar "Dr. Strange" cover, while the UK LP has a depressed-looking and backlit Al against a dark background." The two styles can be seen on the Rhino and BGO re-releases respectively (It's not clear if all of the UK releases had the same design. CBS 32019 certainly had the "ugly" dark picture). On the 1993 Rhino CD release, "What's Going On" has a longer outro than on any of the LPs. "Sirens Of Titan" is based on the novel of the same name by Kurt Vonnegut.

Year Of The Cat (live version) 06:25 Song On The Radio Notes: David Dasch lists the Janus release as having a release date of "12/76-1/77". In the US, "Year Of The Cat" appeared on the "Billboard" singles charts on January 22, 1977. It remained there for 10 weeks, peaking at #8. All songs on Arista’s 1988 CD3 are mistakenly attributed to Al Stewart and Peter White even though Peter Wood was the co-author of "Year Of The Cat". The intro to "Time Passages" is different on this CD. This is basically the album version sans the keyboard intro (i.e. it's missing about the first three bars of the album version) and starts with the harpsichord. "Midnight Rocks" is a remix of the album version, and is about 30 seconds longer. This is due, in part to a repetition of the "Ah, you know it's easy" portion of the song.

Notes: US release on Passport was eventually caught up in the JEM/Passport bankruptcy fiasco, in which many artists' material (including the entire Audion catalogue) was - and remains - embargoed. Marcy Levy co-wrote Eric Clapton's "Lay Down Sally", and is now Marcella Detroit of the group Shakespeare's Sister. The writing credits for "1-2-3" list only the composers of the original pop song. However everything from about half-way through the first verse is Al's. The EMI re-released CD version of "Night Meeting" has a different intro, about twice as long as the original and with a different instrumental mix. Producer: Michael A. Flicker (European album version reads "Produced by Michael A. Flicker with help from Peter White and Rolf Henneman.") Ten Cents 04:14 Dreaming 03:28 Ghostly Horses of the Plain Notes: There are reports of a version of the LP without "Where Are They Now". The European release was also on Enigma, but "manufactured and distributed by Virgin", acceding to Charlie Hulme. Early versions (1-6) of the discography listed Al as contributing guitar as well as vocals, but the evidence seems to be that Peter White dissuaded Al from playing guitar on the recording. If this is correct, "Ghostly Horses of the Plain" acquires the unique distinction of being the only track on an Al Stewart album on which Al himself does not play. Producer: Joe Chiccarelli

The first few minutes of this concert sound a bit muffled, but bear in mind, this was recorded 35 years ago when Al was still unknown to most of the world. Al introduces 'Jenny' by its true name of 'Samuel, Oh How You've Changed'. Later on in years he usually introduces it as 'Jenny'
