MESSAGE
FROM THE

CHAIRMAN

OF THE

ORGANISING COMMITTEE

Anyone working in the area of karst water resources and karst geomorphology recognizes the name of Jovan Cvijic. His book Das Karstphanomen (Wien, 1893) was a milestone in karstology. This book, titled "Karst", was published in Belgrade in 1895. At that time, end of the nineteenth, karstology was a young science and the best substantiated theories were established by the studies undertaken at the area of Dinaric karst. Survival in a karst was a greater challenge than in any other non karstic areas. The complexities of the challenges, as shortage of water and natural hazards, are particularly present in the area with the highest precipitation in Europe, in Montenegro Dinaric karst area, around the Boka Kotorska Bay. In the city of Belgrade we will do our best to provide for you a framework of Cvijic's scientific karstologist's spirit and good science in wonderful locations through the city. In the Boka Kotorska area we will show you a large concentrated amount of spectacular karst features and phenomenon. I look forward and will be honored to meeting all of you at International Conference and Field Seminar: WATER RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN KARST in September 2005. Petar Milanovic

LOCATION Besides being a state capital Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education, science and economy. It has the greatest concentration of institutions of national importance in the field of science and art. There is the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, established in 1886 as the Serbian Royal Academy: the National Library of Serbia, established in 1832; the National Museum, established in 1841 and the National Theatre, established in 1869. The city is also the seat of the Belgrade University, founded in 1808 as the Great School, and the seat of the University of Art. Belgrade has always been a town where important European roads cross, and it is therefore easy to reach in a number of ways. 110 years from the first publishing of Cvijic monograph “Karst” gives us a good reason to start a conference »WATER RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN KARST« in Belgrade.

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

There are just a few places in the world where the eternal struggle of natural elements has shaped the face of the earth with such passion and fascination as in Montenegro. The fabulously jagged coastline of the Adriatic Sea offers you the variety of beaches, coves, bays and islets that you have been dreaming of. The reality is even more exotic. The world’s southernmost and probably the most celebrated fjord in verse, beautiful Mediterranean Kotor Bay, as well as the whole seacoast, is sheltered and shielded by the karstic mountains: Rumija, Orjen, and Lovcen. In these picturesque karstic areas and in the cultivated Zeta and Bjelopavlici valleys, you will get the essence of Montenegrin Mountains. Orjen mountain above the Boka Kotorska Bay is the area with the largest precipitation in Europe, but still with shortage of drinking water, due to very intensive and deep karstification. Beeing mostly a karst region Montenegro is a right place to continue conference and field seminars on »WATER RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN KARST«.
