China OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE The 7th International Conference on Photonics and Imaging in Biology and Medicine (PIBM 2008) will be held November 24‐27, 2008, at Wuhan Science & Technology Convention & Exhibition Center, Wuhan, P. R. China. PIBM is the largest series international biomedical photonics conference in Asia. It was initially held at HUST biyearly since 1999. After three times held in Wuhan (1999, 2001, and 2003), it was hosted once in Tianjin (2005), and then, back to Wuhan yearly since 2006. PIBM is designed to bring together scientists, engineers and clinical researchers from a variety of disciplines engaged in applying optical science, photonics and imaging technologies to problems in biology and medicine. The scope of this conference ranges from basic research to instrumentation engineering, to biological and clinical studies. It is recognized one of the largest and most comprehensive international conferences in China, and representing the highest level of the worldwide research in this field. In the past eight years, 5 volumes of proceedings with totally 510 papers were published by SPIE (International Society for Optical Engineering). All the published papers were indexed by Ei Compendex. More and more young researchers presented and exchanged their innovative ideas on this friendly and professional platform, which made PIBM an unforgettable annual meeting in Wuhan. It the last year, PIBM achieved a big success with an introducing of comprehensive and professional lectures to the conference. Some feedbacks from the student attendees and the invited experts confirmed they’ve learnt a lot during the 40‐min lecture with fundamental knowledge, front techniques and current applications. 75 excellent manuscripts will were published by World Scientific Publishing Co. and recommended to Engineering Index (EI), several of which were published at Journal of Innovative Optical Health Sciences (JIOHS), the new journal launched by World Scientific Publishing group. In 2008, PIBM will be combined with the first Photonics and Optoelectronics Meetings (POEM 2008) hosted by Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics. More international experts in Biophotonics field will be present (for detailed speaker list please check our website at http://www.pibm.cn). PIBM 2008 will keep the good experience of providing useful and professional lectures, as well as introducing several Hot Topic Workshops into the conference. A few Hot Topics in the field will be picked and all the attendees may feel free to come join the in‐depth discussion in the workshop with our invited experts, the panelists. A PIBM exhibition will be held concurrently with the conference. The exhibition will provide attendees with the opportunity to explore innovative solutions to technical challenges faced by research and applied scientists, as well as engineers and managers, in industry, academia, and government organizations. PIBM 2008 is still open for free papers contribution. Multiple poster sessions will allow for lively discussions about the latest research. To encourage students, PIBM 2008 will set Outstanding Student Presentation Award for excellent papers contributed by the students. The winners will be rewarded an opportunity of 15 minutes oral presentation, and answer the questions from the audience. The prizes of 5000, 2000, and 1000 RMB cash (pretax) will be awarded to the winners, respectively. And the excellent papers will be published at JIOHS as well, which will be recommended to Science Citation Index (SCI) in the next year. All the PIBM 2008 presented and peer‐reviewed papers (posters or talks) will be published as Conference Proceedings by World Scientific Publishing Co. and recommended to Engineering Index (EI). The deadline for a 200‐word summary is on August 1, 2008 (for detailed guide please check our website at http://www.pibm.cn).
