4. Related Information 1. Online Education Millions of people have rejected traditional education in favor of E-learning. And many universities have set up E-learning centers. Online-learning enrollments are growing 33 percent a year and are expected to hit 2.2 million by 2004, according to International Data Corp.

2. Wages for Teachers The National Faculty Salary Survey in Private Colleges and Universities(2000-01) covers 80 disciplines/major fields. The highest-paying field is Law, $108,450 (average). The other fields in the top five are Public Health, $89,706; Financial Management and Services, $89,523; Chemical Engineering, $82,878; and Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering, $80,848. A wider salary survey by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) found a 3.5 percent increase in average salaries for faculty at public and private institutions

in recent years.

3. Register for Classes Students register for their classes with the help of their teachers. They are encouraged to register early, as class sizes are usually limited to a certain number of studentsand are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. They may register through the mail, by phone/fax or in person at the Center. Today, it is widespread at colleges and universities to register through the Internet, so it is no longer a phenomenon that students stand in a long line waiting to register for classes at the registration center.

4. Online Life It is certainly true that life online is inescapable. Colleges that have invested a great deal in online learning have often discovered that the extra work for the teachers has been more than they expected, and so have some of the financial costs thus far. However, online education is quite new, and in the future the author’s optimistic predictions may all come true.

Teaching Procedures: Warm-up Activities (15 min) Step 1: Listen and Talk 1. Ask students to listen to the passage and try to fill the missing words in the blanks (See Appendix A for Listening Passage). 2. Ask students to work with their partners and take turns to start the conversations by using the tips provided by teacher (See Appendix B for Communicative Tasks).

Step 2: Ask students to think about the following questions a nd share their opinions with each other 1. How is learning made more convenient through the Internet? People have been making great efforts to put it to use in education. How will it influence your ways to locate information, your classroom, and your study time, etc? Just think of an adult studying for a degree without having to go to a classroom. 2. Why does online education often cost less to the students than classroom-based education? Perhaps you don’t think online education has cost you any less than people study in a traditional way. But don’t forget online education has just begun. And now think of a person who works, takes care of his/her family and also learns, and you can think of a few reasons for this question. 3. Does online education also save the college some money in the long run? Maybe, you’ll say, “Of course, it does. Or people would not try.” But how? Why don’t they save in the beginning? You can think of many of reasons, I think.

Lesson Body (70 min) Step 3: Summarize students’ answers and introduce what we are going to study --- Internet and Education

Step 4: Ask students to scan the passage and find out what the advantages of online education are. Advantages: It is a big informatin provider. / It saves us money and time, / It is convenient…

Step 5: Ask students to read through the text and answer the following questions 1. What characteristics are typical of the traditional classroom? A typical conventional classroom was a room where teachers and students could work together in person, but without computers. 2. Can you tell me one merit of learning via the internet? Easy to get a large amount of learning material Students can have more choices of courses and subjects or time frames. Save our time, money. It’s convenient. 3. Why did the author say that using information online is very helpful? Because even when she is at home with her baby, she is still able to connect to the world and search for any educational materials. 4. How do online students interact with their classmates? They exchange thoughts, opinions and information with their classmates through the Internet. 5. Why does the author say the Internet saves us money and time? Because we don’t need classroom, books and teachers. 6. Are there any limitations for the students to register for an online course? Why or why not? Not according to the author. Because the classroom is not an issue.

7. According to the author, what is the future of online education? It will spread out more and more online.

Step 6: Have a careful study of language points Ask students to identify language points such as useful words and expressions, grammatical structures and difficult sentences. (See Appendix C for words and expressions and Appendix D for difficult sentences). If they fail to identify any of the above language points, the teacher will point out the points himself and ask students to make sentences with the words and expressions or paraphrase and translate some sentences into Chinese.

Step 7: Identify the organization of the text.

Time and money are saved on travel, classroom space, books, etc. Almost anyone can take almost any class whenever they wish. Access to much information and to teachers or classmates is quick and easy. All students can benefit, and some students could not take classes any other way. The increase of online education is certain to occur, and the author clearly feels that this is a very good thing.
