7th/8th Grade Concert Performance Dress Code:
This is the same dress code that is used for the High School bands. Girls wear all black - Girls can wear dress pants and a shirt, or a full-length dress or skirt and shirt (must come to middle of shin or lower) and black shoes. Also, if nylons are worn they should be black. Guys should wear a white shirt, tie, black dress pants, cords or Dockers style pants (No Jeans), dark colored shoes (no tennis shoes), Dark colored belt and dark socks. If you need assistance in finding clothes, let me know, because we have plenty of black pants, white shirts and black shoes you can borrow, as well as girl’s clothing. They grow so fast at this age that we understand if they are not able to get some of these items. Please let us know at least a week in advance and we can help!

6th Grade Concert Performance Dress Code: Dress up for the Concerts!! Mini skirts for girls must
be avoided, since the students will be sitting on an elevated stage. T-shirts, jeans, sweatshirts, shorts, and nylon pants are not acceptable concert dress. We do have various dress clothes for your son/Daughter to borrow. Please let us know before the concert date and we will assist you in getting dress clothes. Individual Accounts- SCRIP! For those families that see their child continuing in the PC band program, it would be beneficial for you to get information on our scrip family fundraiser! SCRIP rebates are 50% of the profit to your individual Family Accounts! Scrip info http://www.portagecentralhsband.org/scrip.html A great savings account to pay for fees, supplies, field trips, Lawrence Central festival in Indianapolis. Contact Maureen Porter for orders 329-6008 or MaureenPorter@yahoo.com or Jenny Ford for orders 324-5225 or jroe_14@hotmail.com Band Room Hours: The band room opens at 7:00am every day. Students are welcome to put instruments into the storage rooms or lockers and ‘hang out’ in the band room until the bell rings to be in the halls. If students need help, they are welcome to get their instruments out and I will be glad to help in the mornings! After school the band room is open until at least 3:05pm. I will also be at school every Thursday until 3:45 to assist students (“Band Jam”)!! All grades are welcome to come in and practice in the band room or to get help from me during these times.. Grading: Students are graded on being prepared for class (includes having a working reed for woodwinds) and their classroom participation/behavior, as well as attendance at concerts. Private Lesson Teacher Scheduling: (We still have openings!!) Due to popular parent and student demand, we are attempting to broaden our in-class Private Lesson program. We understand that it is not always possible for you to schedule lessons into your busy lives, so we have a solution for you. If you want to provide lessons for your child you now have the opportunity of having them once a week during band class. We highly encourage having your own “personal trainer” working with you on an individual basis.

6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Band Student Needs by Instrument
Clarinet Students The Mitchell Lurie brand and size #3.5 are the required reeds for clarinet, unless your private teacher recommends something different. Students should ALWAYS have extra reeds with them in class. One aspect of a student’s grade is their preparedness for class, including having an extra reed(s) when needed. Also check the price of a box vs. individual reeds to save money! (The cheaper reeds are not worth buying, because they will squeak a lot and not last very long.) Clarinet students should also have cork grease to be used to make the clarinet pieces go together with ease. Saxophone Students The Vandoren #3.5 or #3 brand and size are the required reeds for Saxophone. Students should ALWAYS have extra reeds with them in class. One aspect of a student’s grade is their preparedness for class, including having an extra reed(s) when needed. Also check the price of a box vs. individual reeds to save money! (The cheaper reeds are not worth buying, because they will squeak a lot and not last very long.) Oboe/Bassoon Students We now have a great site to purchase the best oboe & bassoon reeds at a great price…Dr. Rose from WMU endorses them 100% for company made reeds…..actually a Jones brand copy! The Jones Co. is no longer making reeds. Online ordering is available! Just go to the site below, click on “double reed product index”, then click on “Jones Reeds – bassoon and oboe” then you need to order the standard oboe or bassoon reed. Here is the site……click “looking for Jones Reeds.” http://www.millermarketingco.com/ Trumpet/Euphonium/Tuba/Horn Students All trumpet students should have valve oil. We recommend “Blue Juice” because it last much longer and has better results. One bottle should last for the entire year and costs about $4. They should also have tuning slide grease, which is also around $4 a container. This grease will allow the trumpet students to move their “kicker” that they must use when playing certain notes. Please have your child’s name on the bottles in marker, so it can be identified. It will also allow all of the brass to empty their different slides when needed. Trombone Students All Trombones need to have a slide cream (not oil) to keep their slide working properly. Any brand will be fine and runs about $5. Also, it would be helpful if they have a small spray bottle of water that fits in their case to use for their slide to keep it moving with ease. Flute Students All Flute students should bring a small handkerchief or comparable piece of cotton material for use in cleaning out their flute.

Private Lesson Information!
September 2009 Dear Band Parents, Private Lessons are the most beneficial tool in helping your child become an outstanding player. The information that is shared “one on one” will include the basics as well as a wealth of knowledge that can only be touched upon in a traditional classroom setting. It’s is similar to you own personal “coach” or trainer! Private lessons are usually one half hour in length and held once per week. Cost per lesson depends upon each individual instructor ranging from $12 to $15 per half-hour. Traditionally the entire month’s payment is due on the first lesson of the month. We will be offering a limited amount of private lessons during your band class once per week. Remember that all lessons will be on a first come first serve basis, so if you are interested do not hesitate to turn in the bottom half of this form. Please fill out the information below and give it to Mr. or Mrs. Flynn and we will arrange for an instructor to contact you with further information. CHS/CMS Bands- Private Lesson Registration
