									SOCIAL WORKER BURSARY/SCHOLARSHIP As part of the Retention Strategy and Initiative to address Critical and Scarce Skills in the Sector, the Department of Social Development offers student who want to pursue a career in Social work a bursary/ Scholarship in the field. REQUIREMENTS To apply for a Bursary/Scholarship, an incumbent needs to first apply to the Institution of higher learning i.e. University. On receiving of Admission Letter from the University, the student can then apply to the department for financial assistance / bursary to study Social Work Degree or Bachelor of Social Science in Social Work. The obtained Admission Letter must be from one of the following institutions of Higher Learning.      Walter Sisulu University Hugenote College Nelson Mandela Metro University UNISA University of Fort Hare

THE APPLICANT MUST:      Be a South African Citizen Comply with the entry requirements set by the University Fully and correctly complete the Scholarship Application form Be prepared to enter into an agreement with the Department (More details will be contained in the agreement) Must complete the qualification within the minimum period as prescribed by the University

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FIRST YEAR STUDENTS      Certified copy of Matric results Certified copy of Identity Document of applicant Certified copy of ID and Proof of income of Parent/ Guardian Current first year students/Prospective students in Social Work who need to undergo a selection process as prescribed by the University must provide proof that they have been selected to continue with their studies. (proof of admission by the University) Unemployed parents/pensioners are requested to submit an affidavit from the Police Station.

CURRENT SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT HOLDERS OF A BURSARY/SCHOLARSHIP SHOULD SUBMIT:   Certified copy of Identity Document of applicant Academic record on the official letterhead of the University

Please note that current Social Work students must have passed all their major subjects and at least 50% of their ancillary subjects to be considered for the scholarship. Please Note: Only FULLY and CORRECTLY completed application forms will be considered.

A selection panel will assess all the received applications. Only successful candidates will be informed in writing. Therefore all applicants need to provide CORRECT postal addresses. The applicant must indicate in writing if he/she accepts the scholarship. A special REPLY SLIP will be attached to the notification letter and will have to be returned to the Departmental representative within 14 days after receipt of the notification. On receipt of the REPLY SLIP, departmental representatives will contact successful applicants and make arrangements for the signing of the scholarship contract. A copy of the acceptance letter and the signed scholarship contract will be provided to NSFAS to arrange for payment. Funds will only be paid out once the scholarship contract, curriculum exposition, the letter of acceptance and the specified statement of fees due to the University have been received by the Department/NSFAS. It is in your own interest to furnish the relevant parties with the above-mentioned documents without delay. Failure to comply with these stipulations will mean that the student forfeits the scholarship ON COMPLETION OF STUDIES Fourth year students must provide copies of their final results within one month after completion of their studies in order to ensure placement according to the contractual Obligations (Contract will provide more information). SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY WILL COVER The scholarship pays out a maximum of R40 000 for each student per year. The amount covers the following:       Registration Tuition Prescribed books Accommodation Meals and Stipend for practice

SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY HOLDERS CONDITIONS Students are required to submit progress reports to the Department of Social Development on June/July & on November/December exams. Students are required to pass all major and elective subjects. List of successful Bursary Holders will be forwarded to respective institutions for re-registration. Scholarship/Bursary holders will be informed in writing. NB: APPLICATION FORMS FOR 2010 WILL BE AVAILABLE ON SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2009.
