Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence, often referred to as EQ, is one of the most talked about ideas in contemporary management theory and practice It is the ability to monitor own’s own and others feelings and to use those feelings to guide thought and action. Put simply it is management by niceness. It’s governing principles are self-awareness, empathy, motivation, self-regulation, and social skills. Unlike IQ, which measures intelligence and which changes very little after the teenage years, it can be learnt. Learning about emotions and their impact is crucial for anyone who wants to get the best from themselves and their team. Being a manager is not about being macho, it’s about being natural.
