MEDIA INVITATION TO CURRICULUM CONFERENCE The matric class of 2008 will be the first students to write the “New Matric,” i.e. the new outcomes-based curriculum. From next year all grades and phases will have embarked on the new curriculum process. The New Curriculum Statements (NCS) are perhaps the most innovative and progressive in the world, yet questions are being asked about the implementation in respect of quality in literacy and numeracy. Now is the time to address the imbalances in how learners experience the new curriculum and then to redress the imbalance in access to education to attain equity and quality in the schooling system.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education will be hosting a Curriculum Conference from Wednesday, 10 October to Friday, 12 October 2007 to focus the attention to key areas, such as:
teacher development and training; a strategy that will ensure access, equity and quality at all schools; quality education special schools and the new curriculum assessment and the new curriculum The conference provides the opportunity and the platform to begin earnest debates and conversations about curriculum and assessment. Keynote speakers include the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Sibusiso Ndebele, KZN Education MEC Ina Cronjé, Dr Blade Nzimande (SACP), Thulas Nxesi, Professor R Vithal (UKZN), Dr Cassius Lubisi, National Director General Mrs P Tyobeka and Mr E Mosioa (National Education), and Mrs Ingrid Parkin from the Deaf Association of South Africa, who will be presenting her paper in sign language.
