RATP DÉVELOPPEMENT MEDIA RELEASE 02 July 2005 For immediate release RATP Développement will operate the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link between Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa The Bombela consortium has been selected by the government of the South African Province of Gauteng to negotiate the contract for the delivery of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link. This project will be implemented as a Public Private Partnership (PPP), and includes the design, construction, procurement, operation and maintenance, as well as the financing of the transport system. Bombela includes Bouygues Construction, Bombardier Transportation, Loliwe Rail Contractors and Loliwe Rail Express (groups of Black Economic Empowered companies), Murray & Roberts and RATP Développement. RATP Développement, a subsidiary of the RATP group, will operate and maintain the whole transport system comprising: A 80km long rail network including 10 stations, with a northsouth line linking Hatfield, in the suburbs of Pretoria, and Johannesburg in 40 minutes with a speed that can reach 160 km/h, and an east west link that will serve the international airport in less than 15 minutes. A bus network which will complement the rail system by providing a distribution and feeder service within a 10 km radius around the stations. Parking facilities that will be built close to the stations to attract potential rail users. The construction of the system should start in early 2006. The opening of the system is planned to coincide with the Soccer World Cup that will be hosted by South Africa in 2010. The concession for operation and maintenance will be for a 15 years period, contracted to RATP Développement in association with South African partners, through a local company in which RATP Développement will be the majority shareholder. RATP Développement will bring to Bombela its expertise in multimodal operation during the design and construction period, will train the operating staff and will organise a transfer of skills to the South African teams and particularly to the BEE companies. Gautrain has been designed as a fast and comfortable system that will present an attractive alternative for car drivers currently facing a highly congested road network at peak hours.
