“We will even be ready by 2009” – Acsa
Parking bays and terminal space to increase by more than half says Acsa Gaylyn Wingate-Pearse 21 May 2007 South Africa's airports will be ready for the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup and expansion plans will be completed on time. "We will even be ready by 2009", said CEO of Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa), Monhla Hlahla, speaking at the South African Property Owners Association (Sapoa) annual convention. She outlined the country's airports capability capacity, pointing out that over the next two years, the number of parking bays would rise by more than 50% and terminal areas would increase by just over 200 000m2. OR Tambo International Airport facilitates a minimum of 52 000 people per day and during the world cup, it is expected that an additional 20 000 more will pass through our airports, Hlahla explained. Currently disjointed buildings, at OR Tambo will come together through six development projects, including a central terminal, and will be ready to serve up to 25m passengers a year. Critics point out that the current congestion at SA's airports is due to passengers and vehicles being on the same level. "From a planning point of view, we are unfortunately stuck with an old design", maintained Hlahla. She explained that it would be possible to change the design in Cape Town and Durban but it was not as easy in Johannesburg. "We need additional land to sort the problem out and we have looked everywhere to expand but OR Tambo is landlocked." Hlahla said this would be sorted out after 2010. Acsa manages ten airports in SA - three international airports in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and the country's six largest domestic airports in Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, East London, George, Kimberly and Upington, as well as Pilanesburg International Airport.
