Looking For Value At Shongweni
SHONGWENI SALE - Tuesday 12 February
The 2008 Michael Holmes Bloodstock February Sale takes place at the Shongweni Polo Grounds in KZN on Tuesday 12th February, starting at 11.00 am. Some 150 horses have been catalogued for this ever popular annual auction, with everything on offer from broodmares, to unraced two-yearolds, yearlings and, of course, horses-in-training. Breeders and followers of other equestrian pursuits are well catered for, but first and foremost Shongweni is all about affordable racing stock and this is where we will focus the bulk of our attention. MATTHEW LIPS takes a look at some of the lots on offer, in catalogue order. Unusually, the sale commences with a broodmare category and the first 22 lots on offer all fall into this category.
XAAR is a hard-knocking three-time winner who won his penultimate race. #83 AMAZING ASH is a winning mare by National Assembly who finished second in her most recent KZN race. #84 ANSEL has won three races in KZN, including his most recent start. He looks set to pick up a few more. #88 BANNENBERG is a dual-winning Saumarez gelding who has not been tried yet over the sort of distance where so many of his sire’s progeny have thrived. He could still have quite a lot up his sleeve. #89 BISTRO BELLE is a dual winning mare by Rambo Dancer and is the half sister to Stakes winner Naan Khataay. #92 CREDITABLE is a son of Gold Press who has only started five times and who could be worth taking a chance with on sand. #94 DELIVER A DREAM and #95 DRIVE TO DREAM are respectively winning daughters of Rambo Dancer and Personal Hope from solid black type families. #97 ELEMENTOFDISGUISE has placed in three of his last four KZN starts and can collect his second career win at any moment. #99 EMPERADOR is one for the shortlist. This 3yo son of Parade Leader has won once from only five starts in KZN and is a half brother to Elusive Fort with the potential to still do better. #103 FIFTY is another from Parade Leader’s first crop with one win in KZN to his name and the promise of more to be had. #108 FUTURITY is a daughter of Goldkeeper who recently won her maiden in KZN and who could be one to try and exploit in fillies’ handicaps on sand. #109 GLAMOROUS has placed in her last two starts and can record a second career win soon. #112 GOLDEN JUBILEE is a winning daughter of Gold Press with a nice low merit rating that could be well exploited at Flamingo Park. #113 GOLDEN OCCASION has won one race and some good recent efforts must suggest that another victory is imminent. Much the same can also be said for #115 GREEK HERO, who has already proven his worth on the firm Gauteng winter ground and who could be just the sort to do well there in the next winter. #120 IMVULA is a one-time winning Saumarez who could be worth a try in Port Elizabeth’s frequent lowrated staying handicaps especially. #122 INDIAN ICON is a two-time winner who is regularly been tried over middle distances but who seems most effective in sprints. A drop in distance could bring out improvement.

2008 Shongweni February Sale affords bree ders the opportunity to pur chase a number of exciting Bro odmares. The dispersal of Wally Sharratt’s Morgenlicht’s Stud, all without reserve gives Bre eders a chance to acquire some exciting stock, many with foals at foot Exciting broodmare entr . ies have also been received from Clarkin Thoroughbreds who consign Tamarix, the dam of Tamarino Bay who is in foal to Malhub (USA).

Breeders Also Get a Chance The

he horses-in-training section kicks off with #23 JOYCE THE VOICE, a winning daughter of “sand” sire Gold Press who could be of interest to Flamingo Park enthusiasts especially. #24 JUMBO JET is a twice winning son of Jet Master who is still quite lightly raced. #25 KINGS TROOP is a useful 3yo son of National Assembly who has won three of his nine races and finished a good third in his latest race. He is sure to be popular. #26 LA BALLERINA is a three-times winning daughter of Rambo Dancer who can win again before taking up stud duties. #31 MAJESTIC LITES is a 3yo Dancing Duel filly with one win from only seven starts who has never raced in a handicap. She should pay her way in that sphere. #33 MEGGAN JANE is a twice-winning daughter of very popular sire Kahal with potential as both a racehorse and broodmare. #36 NATIONAL COMMAND is a hard knocking sprinter who led throughout to win his last start and who should continue to do well in handicaps. #40 is a lightly raced maiden daughter of National Assembly from a family laden with black type. #41 PENINSULAR is a lightly raced gelding who has won once from just four starts and who can go on to win more. #42 PERFECT OBSESSION is a quite lightly raced and winning son of Al Mufti. #45 PROJECTILE has some stud potential being a winning daughter of Camden Park from a nice female line. #46 RED FLYER has won four times over sprints with a very decent 25% strike rate and is certainly not finished yet. #49 ROMAN TRADE stays all day and is a twice-winning son of Al Mufti who should be popular with buyers from provinces were long distance races are common. #50 ROSE MODEL is a 3yo daughter of Model Man who has only had a handful of starts. She is a half sister to Gr 2 placed Infinite Spirit and has stud potential eventually. #51 ROYAL BOUQUET is a daughter of National Emblem with three wins to her credit and the capacity to win more in fillies’ handicaps. #52 RUSSIAN ICON is a lightly raced Dominion Royale who won a maiden at his last start in KZN. This close relative of Gr 1 winner Domino Man is improving and can go on to better things. #53 SANDOWN BAY has won once from nine starts and looks to be finding form again at just the right time for any new connections to take advantage of. #56 SO RAVEN is a consistent twice-winning son of Rambo Dancer whose next win appears to be due at any moment. #60 SPORTS BABE is a daughter of very successful filly sire Sportsworld who finished fourth in her only start. She is bound to improve on that. #61 ST BERNARD is a two time winner with plenty of placed efforts to his credit who can start repaying a new owner’s bills right from the start. #63 SUGAR MILL is a lightly raced maiden who is knocking on the door and who could easily win first time out under new colours. #64

SUN STRUCK is a two time winning gelding who won his penultimate start and who should have more in the tank. #65 SWEET ROBERTA is a twice winning daughter of Spaceship from the family of Gr 1 winner Let’s Rock ‘n Roll. #66 TAKE THE TURN was beaten less than one length into third place first time out of the maidens and won’t be hard to place to advantage in fillies’ handicaps. #68 TARA’S FLIGHT is a 3yo daughter of Tara’s Halls who has placed twice from two starts in KZN. #72 TIGER JACK is a consistent onetime winning gelding who seems to need a test of stamina and who could also thrive in a province with a regular supply of stayers’ races. #74 TOP SPEED is a winning daughter of Goldkeeper. If nothing else, she is surely worth a try on sand somewhere, given her sire’s progeny splendid record on that surface. #77 WAR CORRESPONDENT is a very consistent three-time winner. As a son of Gold Press he could do even better on sand, a surface he has never raced on. #78 WILDHAY is an Australian-bred gelding who has won three times and who has finished third in his last two KZN races. His next win cannot be far off. #79 WINGING IT WILD is a twice-winning daughter of champion sire Jet Master who looks capable of winning again before she enters stud. #81 ADAMY is a son of Royal Academy who has gone close to winning again out of the maidens. He is still quite lightly raced and has a liking for soft ground, which could be very interesting with the Cape Town winter not a million moons away. #82 AL

The unraced two-year-old section is made up largely (but certainly not exclusively) of lots offered by Chris Saunders’ Invermooi Stud. They include several progeny of promising Announce, of Slew The Red and Opera King (young sires who still derve a chance perhaps) and a colt from the first crop of Danehill’s Gr 2 winning son Requiem. The last named youngster is a half brother to Listed placed Lady Red and makes particular appeal. Unraced two-year-olds from other vendors include the progeny of such well tested and successful sires as Count Dubois, National Emblem, and Jallad. There is also a colt by USA Gr 1 winner Labeeb, who died during his second SA season at stud. His offspring have caught the eye and there won’t be many chances to buy any. The sires represented in the small yearling section are The Sheik, Announce and his younger full brother Sarge, and Fanatic Dane, whose career is starting to gather steady momentum now.

The broodmare section includes numerous mares with foals at foot. Covering sires and sires of foals at foot include KZN’s ever popular duo of Muhtafal and Kahal, internationally proven King Of Kings, UK Gr 1 winner Malhub, Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Miesque’s Approval, emerging young stallion Mogok, the somewhat under-estimated London News, sireof-the-moment Joshua Dancer (hot off a terrific Cape summer season), Announce, and newcomers Bezrin, Way West, and Modus Vivendi. The mares themselves include numerous who have been prolific winner-producers and there is no reason whatsoever why they won’t carry on for new owners.
