“Produced by Europeans for a WORLDWIDE READERSHIP”

Linngari made it a Carnival Group race double when landing the $250,000 Gr.2 Al Fahidi Fort a mile on the rain softened turf, at seventh racemeeting of the 2006 Dubai International Racing Carnival at Nad Al Sheba yesterday. Race favourite Linngari, who claimed the Gr.3 Al Rashidiya three weeks ago, took up the running halfway down the straight from the long time leader Holiday Camp (Chester House). Linngari, a four-year-old son of Indian Ridge and a former charge of Sir Michael Stoute, was having only his second outing for trainer Herman Brown and crossed the line just over two lengths clear of the Charles O’Brien-trained Lord Admiral (El Prado), with Holiday Camp in third. After the race Brown said, “Linngari has been working exceptionally well although the rain made me a little nervous. We decided to sit behind the pace which I think suited him as he has such acceleration. The plan now is to head straight for the Gr.1 Dubai Duty Free on Dubai World Cup day if we are invited.” Linngari’s jockey Kevin Shea, who rode the filly Ipi Tombe to victory in the 2003 Dubai Duty Free compared the two horses and said, “Ipi Tombe just has the edge at the moment over Linngari, but Linngari has enormous potential.”

Stallions at the Irish National Stud, home of Indian Ridge (€75,000), have made a good start to 2006. In addition to Indian Ridge’s dual Group winning son Linngari, his stablemate Celtic Swing (€9,000) was the sire of recent Gr.1 Lightning Stakes winner Takeover Target – runs again on Saturday, whilst another resident Desert Prince (€12,000) was the sire of Chinkara, who earned his connections $71,500 when winning the Al Rostamani Group Stakes, a mile and a half race on the same card at Nad Al Sheba last night. MAGIC MILLIONS SALES TALK

Encosta de Lago has made the Premier sale his own in recent years, sustaining an uncontested stranglehold on the top-lots, while his graduates excel on the track. On a record-breaking opening day in Melbourne last year, he was responsible for eight of the nine lots bringing A$200,000 or more, including the new Premier Sale record price of A$480,000. Five months later he created history becoming the first Australian bred sire to record over 200 winners in one season. Such was the impact of the Fairy King stallion that, in 2004, Coolmore bought out their fellow

syndicate members to relocate him from Blue Gum Farm, his home since retiring in 1997, to their Hunter Valley base, where he stood for A$132,000 in 2005. Next week’s Premier sale showcases 32 yearlings from Encosta De Lago’s final Victorian crop – arguably the best book he covered while standing there. Among them are six lots out of Stakes winning mares, while a full-brother to the multiple Gr.1 winner Lashed is sure to be one of the highlights of his representatives. Progeny of first crop sires Choisir and Bel Esprit dominated the Inglis Classic sale, with Chilean import Hussonet not far behind. All three are well represented at the Premier Sale, along with Victorian-based first croppers Dash For Cash and Delago Brom who both have over 20 yearlings catalogued. Fellow new boy Johannesburg is also high on numbers with 20, while local second season sire Testa Rossa boasts 23. Galileo’s first Australian two-year-olds are already making an impact on the track, while his popularity continues to abound in the sale ring. The Sadler’s Wells stallion has 16 yearlings due to sell at the Premier including a number with Stakes-winning relations. Late Blue Gum sire Rubiton is not high on numbers but claims two lots with Gr.1-winning siblings, namely a full-sister to Rubitano and a half-sister to 2004/05 champion juvenile Fashions Afield. Blue Gum roster mate King Charlemagne also boasts a pair with Gr.1 winners under their first dams – half-brothers to Bohemiath and The A Train. General Nediym is having an outstanding year with his juveniles headlined by 2005 Premier sale graduates I Got Chills and Follow The Till. The Widden sire has 13 to represent him.

He was driven clear and ran on well in the closing stages to score by two and a quarter lengths from Lord Admiral (El Prado), who stayed on well in the final furlong to take second. He is the first foal of his dam Lidakiya (Kahyasi), who won three times. She is a half-sister to the triple Listed winner Livadiya (Shernazar), who finished second to Powerscourt (Sadler’s Wells) in the 2004 Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, and the Gr.3 Prix Vanteaux-third Liska (Bigstone). Their dam Lilissa (Doyoun), won twice and is a half-sister to Gr.3 Prix Minerve winner Linnga (Shardari) and the Gr.1 San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap-third Liyoun (Shernazar). South African Racing and Bloodstock News

This will be a quiet weekend by normal standards with just one race over the weekend claiming Graded status. The venue is Turffontein racecourse and the race is a Gr.3 five furlong handicap named after one of South Africa’s best loved sprinters in the late 1990’s, Tommy Hotspur. He was by outstanding speed sire, Harry Hotspur, from the well established line of speed sire Gold Bridge. Sadly this line appears to be in danger of disappearing although a Gr.1 winning son of Harry Hotspur, Super Magic, stands at stud in South Africa. Tommy Hotspur’s exceptional early speed won him ten races from fourteen career starts, three of which were Stakes races including the Gr.1 Computaform Stakes. Trained for the most part by Gary Alexander in Johannesburg, the stable still keeps tabs on their former star who is reported to be in fine fettle. This year’s renewal sees an emerging star try his hand at the top level and Let’s Rock’N Roll will have to be on the top of his game if he is to beat Vega (Jallad) at the weights. But, Paul Matchett’s Muhtafal (Mr Prospector) three-year-old is already half way to achieving Tommy Hotspur’s record and, over the minimum trip, might have enough improvement left in him to keep the normally fast finishing Vega at bay. Although well out at the weights, another Muhtafal, Gypsey Caravan, is very fast and might earn prize money for connections. At Kenilworth racecourse, the innovative bonus scheme linked to the GrandWest Yearling Sale takes place. Over R200,000 worth of “credit” at the GrandWest Yearling Sale will accrue to the winning connections of the GrandWest Handicap and the Cape Breeders Handicap on Saturday. For full details click on:

JUVENILE WINNER OF THE WEEK As we enter the tail end of the South African summer, the better class of juvenile is stepping out and last week was no exception. Ascot Stud features highly with this week’s two selections, Harmony Gem and Coastal Trade. The former is by Ascot’s latest stallion, Lecture (Strike The Gold), who was bred, raised and consigned by the farm and the latter is by Al Mufti (Roberto), the stud’s stalwart stallion. Harmony Gem won his maiden at the second time of asking last Saturday at Kenilworth racecourse in good style and the form looks reasonable on a line through the fourth placed horse. Always up with the pace in a slowly run race, Harmony Gem galloped on well to the line for owner/breeder Peter and Val Fenix and is sure to join Joey Ramsden’s team when they ship out to Durban for the Kwa-Zulu Natal Winter Season. Another winner for the increasingly formidable team of Marcus Jooste and trainer Charles Laird, Coastal Trade revealed his class at Newmarket racecourse on

Tuesday night. A big, powerful sort, Coastal Trade was simply too good for his rivals and, in the post-race interview on Tellytrack, Laird hinted that Coastal Trade might be his SA Nursery colt, having previously won the race with a son of Coastal Trade’s damsire Silvino (also the sire of multiple Dubai winner Tyson). Coastal Trade was a R375,000 purchase from Bloodstock South Africa’s 2005 National Yearling Sale. INDUSTRY NEWS The South African Equine Trade Council, under the Chairmanship of Dr Ashley Parker, is taking a delegation from the South African equestrian industry to the Middle East next week. One of the highlights for the horseracing fraternity will be a cocktail function in the Millennium Grandstand at Nad Al Sheba racecourse on “Super Thursday” under the patronage of HE Dikgang Moopeloa, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the UAE. The cocktail function will celebrate South Africa’s relationship with Dubai and introduce the South African horseracing and bloodstock industry to various dignitaries, officials and potential investors from the UAE. Non-racing interests are also represented on the delegation, and a technical team will explore issues pertaining to the movement of horses from South Africa with relevant veterinary officials during the course of the trip. For more detail of the trade delegation’s movements and possible meetings, please contact Claudie Naidoo on Email:, or Shakira Motan, Trade Manager of the South African Consulate in Dubai on: Tel: +971 4 3975222; Fax: +971 4 3979602; Email: As previously described, another important event to be held in March will be Racing South Africa’s National Horseracing Convention.
