A contingent of Western Province Table Tennis players left for Benoni on 23 and 24 September respectively to partake in the 2009 SA National Combined Championships. 6 Seniors of the Ravens club – Luke Abrahams, Shaun Jones, Theo Lingeveldt, Kurt Lingeveldt, Claude Petersen and Bernie April were included as well as 5 Juniors – Joshua du Plooy, Savannah April, Andrea Andrews, Cheyenne Smith, Marvin April. The teams in general performed well in their respective team events. In the U12 section, Joshua and Savannah won 7 medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze). Savannah played U14 as well and in total this section won 4 medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze). Marvin was the only player for U17 and he won Gold. In the Senior Section, Gold, Silver and Bronze were achieved to a total of 11 medals. Not only did the players achieve well, but their respective coaches also attained medals. The total tally for medals received at this Championship was 30 including vets and disabled players. The most successful Ravens TTC athlete was Savannah April with a total of 5 Medals. The individual results also proved WP to be stronger than other provinces with champions in most sections: Senior men – Theo Cogill, U17 Boys – Codi Meyer, U14 Boys – Keagan Lingeveldt. Byron Abrahams the 2008 U12 Champion was placed second. In the Girls/Ladies section, Jade Sassman was crowned the U12 champ with Caitlin Lingeveldt as the U14 champ. Cheyenne Smith reached the quarters of the girls U17 with Sheila Page playing in the semis of the senior section. Although Ravens could not produce a champ this year, we are determined to continue with our development of our juniors and with commitment and enthusiasm of the seniors; we are definitely going for gold in the next Championships. With early preparation of our teams and conditioning of our players, we are capable to achieve the best results.

October 2009

Welcome to this month’s edition of our club’s Chatter. It’s almost the end of the year and many functions and activities will now start to happen. Weather is clearing up (with the odd shower or two) but in general we are all preparing for summer. The Ravens also still have a few activities planned before the year ends. We also wish everyone at school, college or varsity well for the exams that lay ahead, especially all matriculants.

Oct 2009

During October 1989 the club was officially established and the Exec thought it appropriate to celebrate our 20th year of existence in fine style… On Saturday 24 October a Formal function was held in commemoration and everyone seized the opportunity to dress up from their normal turquoise and black club attire. Bevan Steyn, the chairman of the club, opened the ceremony with a powerful speech honouring those who were enthusiastic, had vision and in general played an important role in the building of the club over the past 20 years. Mr Hasie Ismail in his speech reiterated with added historical facts and info and congratulated the club on a job well done. Five of the original founder members were honoured for their commitment and loyalty to the development of the club. Each of them received a blazer handed over by the WP Chairman, Denver Titus. A toast, proposed by Brian Buckton, was to congratulate and wish the club well for the years lying ahead. Throughout the evening a presentation on some historic and special moments of the club, was shown with pride. Chrystal Swanson entertained the guests with beautiful songs to enhance them mood of the evening.

The league season is drawing to a close therefore practise/training sessions will also become non-existent. Individuals who still want to have some training during the off-season, must make prior arrangements. Saturday training sessions at the Ravensmead High School have come to a sudden end due to interruptions beyond our control. We hope to start again in February 2010 with a well-rested and enthusiastic junior crowd.
